I gather from a friend in the BBC that Newsnight are covering BRAKEs campaign to halt the speed camera decline tonight.

Not finalised yet apparently, but BRAKE are due to be joined by George Monbiot - a car hating BRAKE apologist, and either Captain Gatso, or Claire Armstrong from SAFESPEED.

Not sure if they have one or not - but they should have a BiB representative since they will still operate speed checks even without the cameras - if the budget allows!

It's a shame that PH don't have a spokesperson to go to the table, but no doubt we can debate it here at length after the program!

With Moonbat there I'll wager that removing scameras will accelerate 'global warming' - Streaky

Newsnight sent a reporter to BRAKE's little "anti disbandment of the local SCP" demonstration this lunchtime at Trowbridge (with the access on little - I went to have a look and the head count of adults was about 15)

Idris Francis was there being interviewed on camera, but I don't know who the camera belonged to.

As I said on the other thread, this demonstration was hardly worth any news organisation reporting.

A PH representitve isnt that bad an idea. Granted they would still need to be invited on. But there are not many people there to fight the corner of a motorist who enjoys driving, and doesnt look at there car as a white good on wheels. I think PH has a big enough user base to merit something like this. Although highly unlikely, I would feel happier if somebody was on programes aimed at this sort of debate that wasnt going to think as extremely as BRAKE, I know they do alot of good as well but I seem to disagree with more of what I here from them than I agree with.

Monbiot and those like him can't accept that the incompetent taxophile control freak nanny statists they adore were booted out.

Clare Armstrong did a good job there I thought, quiet, dignified and stuck to her guns especially at the end getting the point over about cameras being ineffective against drunk drivers. Monbigot came over (accurately)as a bit of a tit, much more and he'd have been frothing at the mouth

yes

I think that this was a victory for Clare.

This Newsnight piece, and todays BRAKE insignificant sideshow at Trowbridge, has certainly done nothing to turn the tide against the demise of SCPs.

Being interested in such things, and having been at Trowbridge County Hall this morning, I was standing behind the cameraman as he shot that woman in the black leather jacket (sorry I ought to know her name but I don't) walking into shot and then the cameraman panned into the "crowd." It struck me then that, if there had been vast hoards of supporters, he would have panned to them first before he homed in on the 15 or so on the Council Office steps.

I can confirm to anybody who needs it confirmed that the "vast hoards" weren't there biggrin

In fact, I came away quite satisfied at the outcome. At the M4 protest in 2005, we got about 450 cars taking part. BRAKE managed to drum up support from about 15 adults plus a few kids.

One-nil, methinks biggrin

Agreed,
Anyone watching that would have to be impressed with Clare and her restraint with his repeated quoting of dodgy statistics, he was quite offensive in his delivery whereas she, wisely IMHO, gave him plenty of rope.

Monbiot has never heard of EuroNCAP ratings then?

Monbiot better go and get a lecture from Mad Max in his dungeon.

Nice of the Safe Speed Spokeswoman to mention driving standards.

Car Occupant and Motorcyclist Deaths, 1994-2002 by Dr. Jeremy Broughton of the TRL, commissioned by the DoT.

It's driving standards.

Sadly the mother of young Tyrice has had her loss diminished by the relative of the deceased from the swimming pool. frown

I think Clare did well, but you can see the differance in media savy ways between a bigot like Monbiant who kept interupting when she was making salient points that shot his agruments away and Clare. The interviewer also was against the loss of cameras as she described safe speed as being happy at the removal, even when Clare expalined that they do not condone speeding she still had another dig later on.
The proceeding piece from the BBC was also bias, fimed against a busy road where they apparently found it difficult to cross, then uninterupted bile from Brake, all statistics provided by Brake, so no bias there then.

Overall good result on the subject for Clare

Presenter, Laura Kuenssberg (sp?) - not exactly unbiassed?

Claire Armstrong is an ideal representative for an organisation like Safespeed, precisely because she looks like she wouldn't say boo to a goose, but has all the figures in her head.

If Safespeed instead had someone as shouty as Monbigot, they'd run the risk of coming over a bit Clarkson-ish.

There's always bias to one side or the other, but I thought the presenter was ok. She didn't let them squabble over statistics which put Monbiot off a bit and he then started arguing against more police patrols on the road which sounded bizarre

Its easy to see bias that isn't there when you personally have more support for one side of the argument than the other. The way these things work is that the presenter is supposed to challenge both sides, and that is exactly what happened:

1. Monbiot says his piece.
2. Presenter - "there you are Ms Armstrong, he's right isn't he?"
3. Clare picks Mombiot's argument to pieces
4. Presenter - "there you are, Mr Mombiot, she's right isn't she?"

And so on until its time for the next item.

I agree she wasn't too weighted in that piece and, yes, you can see bias against you more easily than for, but Kuenssberg is a bit too New Labour in her political interviewing and presentations to camera for my taste.

Monbiot repeated his bit about speeding being a middle calss, tory offence that's deemed OK.
