Am I alone in having problems playing Bluray discs in a Bluray player?!

Regularly have the same issue when loading a Bluray disc.
The player says it is loading, and sits there for minutes on end not doing anything and then it says 'Insert Disc', or 'Disc not recognised'.
I've had a couple of discs that have loaded the menu and then won't go any further.
But mostly they just hang.
This doesn't happen with all discs, just seems random.
No problems with DVDs.

I've updated the firmware which doesn't seem to have made any difference.
The discs look to be clean and unscratched, though it is discs from Blockbusters and LoveFilm where the problem seems to occur.

Any ideas of other things to try?

It's getting frustrating!

So are my problems really a symptom of a dodgy laser?
Why would it play some titles and not others?

Does your player have an internet connection?
If so disable it.

My PS3 wouldn't play some discs. Anything that had any extra internet content basically, so if it needed access and it was slow or down the disc would get as far as the menus then stop.

Do you mean is it connected?
Or, could it be connected if I wanted it to be?

Yes, it can be, but it isn't.
Mostly, when a disc doesn't work it won't even get to the menu.
Just keeps on saying 'loading'

What make and model is your player? Some of the older machines are pretty bad in terms of compatibility and loading speed, even with firmware updates...

Hmm... no major problems with that player that I have read about. What disks are causing problems?

Well the first one we had a problem with was 2012, which I know has been reported as having problems. It loaded up the menu, then wouldn't go any further.

Problem titles include:
- TV series, 'Married, Single, Other'
- Up
- Million Dollar Baby
