To Kinect or not to Kinect?
Discussion
Hmmm Im buying my replacement xbox anytime from today to the next couple of days.....
I'd written kinnect off as a gimmicky toy but saw someone playing with one today and it did look very good.
So gimmicky toy that I dont need or the future of gaming that I should wait for and purchase next Wednesday?

Well I'm not sure what your talking about, but I was musing about KINECT the other day and thought it would be useful if you used your xbox as a dvd player / sky box/ zune movies and music etc....not much use for anything else!
Project Natal then!Hmm I do use it a bit for it's media capabilities...,
There's a really good video review on engagdet. Ten minutes odd of commentary. Their conclusion is "close but not quite." They really like the experience, but find the lack of buttons a problem and wonder just what types of gameplay that limitation will impose.
So - for me - not yet. It's a wait and see.
(Although the Yoga application looks awesome)

I was pretty taken in by all the hype and hopes that were being talked about in the early life of Natal - that demo with Milo the AI was very impressive, together with the speed of the system it looked like an impressive bit of kit (who can really say no to controlling your xbox like Captain Picard?! "XBOX, play movie, make it so") but the more I see of it the less I like. I sat and went through some of the streaming vids on the dashboard and it seems so slow - like it would eventually just get in the way of what you want to be doing.
The hand gesture thing in particular is pretty stupid I think, where you have to hover over the selection for a good while before it will accept, I would honestly feel like a muppet if I was doing that as opposed to just pressing either the media remote or controller which work instantly. What happens if you reach for a drink or someone gets up off the sofa while you're doing it and affect your aim - it seems like style over substance at this stage.
Quite simply I don't think that at this stage Kinect can deliver what us geeks were expecting - perhaps too much hype from the hype King Peter Molyneux et al had been thrown around before the launch. It looks fine as a toy and a bit of fun but at the moment ahm oot.

Hype. Are there any games that actually use it yet?
It's just a gimmick for the kiddies to put on their Christmas list and have bragging rights over their Wii-owning peers.
There are a few Kinect specific games that will be released alongside the unit, although none of them would interest most gamers. The majority of them seem to be aimed at families or young children. Here are some reviews of the Kinect games:It's just a gimmick for the kiddies to put on their Christmas list and have bragging rights over their Wii-owning peers.

If the "extremely short supply" claims are correct then maybe the numbers of units made are being restricted in case of poor take-up? Less unsold units to dispose of later perhaps.
I can't help thinking it's Microsoft trying to tap into the Wii market. The games will have to stay simple in order to control them with delayed hand gestures. One for all the grannies out there to buy Little Johnnie for Xmas.

You can't control the xbox dashboard from it, nor the media player. The only thing you can gesture control is Zune.
Also, you need to be 6ft away from the TV for single player, 9ft away for 2 player, and need to have 5ft of space either side of you.
It's crap and broken basically
Source plz? Also, you need to be 6ft away from the TV for single player, 9ft away for 2 player, and need to have 5ft of space either side of you.

Reading around space means I couldn't even consider it, my lounge simply doesn't have enough distance between the TV and the sofa. Also, you need to be 6ft away from the TV for single player, 9ft away for 2 player, and need to have 5ft of space either side of you.

I wouldn't call it broken as such, but the camera is only going to have a limited field of view.
Never been that enthused by the Wii or PS3 Move either mind.
I've played on a PS3 Move and really thought it was pretty crap, much preferred the Wii alternative.
The Kinect is another beast though, as it's really something else.
I'll look into the space issue, but other than that they (reviewers) seem to be pretty enthusiastic about it? In a way that, if you have the space, it actually works pretty good?
How is it broken and crap?

Did you read the very detailed review that was linked a couple of posts ago? I didn't think it would be that good but I actually have doubts of it ever being released. If released I believe it will go the way of the atari lynx or sega gamegear, it works but is soon forgotten. The Kinect is another beast though, as it's really something else.

As for the likes of the Lynx, well, that was very well received, although with it's faults.
I read the review and a couple of other reviews and all seem to be on the same track:
- Needs some work in the menu navigation (although some games seem to get that right)
- Needs more games (what platform doesn't on release?)
- Needs a lot of space to operate (sorry, but I tried to play wii tennis in a 10ft living room, and that doesn't work either)
- Some games make great use of it and it works there without many faults
So overall seems pretty good for quite a unique/revolutionary concept imho.
