Only thing I hated about my 84 was the ride - I changed the front and rear springs, shocks, lowered the tyre pressures but still couldn't get it to ride nice (roads round London are bad though).

The car introduced me to Corvette ownership, looked the b*ll*x, was actually fairly quick (15.01 sec quarter, stock except exhaust and chip, nearly a 14 second car!) and when I sold it I made money on it!

I could never understand why people hated the crossfire engine, apart from perhaps because better things followed(?) All I needed in 2 years was a gearbox (they are a bit weak), alternator pulley, and battery and it still ran sweet after 117,000 miles. Talked to the next owner who took it to 130,000 miles and he had no problems either.

Easy to work on too, having just done a couple of "routine" jobs on my vette I'd say the TPI is one of the trickiest cars to work on, easily as bad as the V12 jags I've owned!

Don't know why I felt a bit inferior when I owned my 84 but when I went drag racing with the Corvette club, the TPIs didn't exactly leave me for dead, a lot of the time I beat them off the line (3.07 gear, perfect for launching a vette) and about half way down the travch they inched past. Not bad.

You're right to stick with your vette, sorry don't know a painter your way, just wanted to sing the old 84s praises a bit!

Difficult to spray properly, Vettes. You tend to get pinholes and you need to use the right etching primer. I've seen too many that bubble like a boiling cauldron several months after the spray so whatever you do, use a fibreglass specialist.

One thing, it won't be cheap. I was quoted £3k back in 1994 to respray an '85. It'll be at least £5k or more now I should think. Lad had his C4 sprayed locally for a lot less. Sat back and waited for the blisters which duly arrived.
