hi,

im on pistonheads forum anyway becuse i own a lotus esprit but i looked on the auto trader and this c5 jumped out at me, its a corvette c5 "chopper" its from arizona and been on mtv cribs and is a 5.7ltr with 20" chromes on it

i know NOTHING about corvettes at all, but i loved this car in the pics, can anyone tell me what is a "chopper" the dealer tells me there are only 100 made and its a custom style, also any clues on speed/mpg/insurance for one of these.

thankyou very very much

No such thing as an official "chopper edition" though ads for that car have been circulating for a while and we've taken the p*ss a bit on this forum.

Car is ridiculously overpriced as it is for a 98 (first year of the convertible) Don't know how it would ride on thoise 20" rims though it would look good in a Nelly video!

How to make a "Chopper edition" (one of 100, yeah right!): Buy a 98 convertible, add a stereo and big rims, call it chopper edition, price it as if it's something special.

I'm sure some of the C5 owners will chip in (though none of them had heard of such a limited edition special when we discussed this car before on the forum) but if I were you I'd get a "Corvette black book" or equivalent ahich will detail the real limited editions as some (not all)traders just seem to make things up as they go along.

On the autotrader site there's a 60,000 mile 98 convertible from a dealer for £19,500 and a 99 low mileage convertible for £22,995.

If I were you I'd look at them all to get a feel for how they stand up against each other. I'd also want to know what the "chopper" rides like next to the others - if it doesn't ride any harsher the "rap video" wheels may be a bonus.

That car has been for sale for several months now though it was up for £24,995. Maybe it's a good car though it's a shame the dealer lied about the "100 made limited edition" bit which is complete fabrication and casts a doubt in my mind about anything else he may say.

Only you can decide if the Lotus or a vette are right for you. Look at a few vettes and see if you like them, as well as seeing for yourself what they're like to get a feel for price / condition. I'd get that "black book" and see what options are available as there are some nice toys available on C5s, especially the heads up display.

One piece of advice, if you're not happy with the condition I'd walk away unless it's stupidly cheap. They may be cheap to fix next to a Ferrari, but they aint that cheap!

There's no shortage of C5s available either, some have been on the autotrader site for ever...

Yep, the Corvette is a different animal to the Esprit or any other Lotus. Think of them more as a Grand Tourer in comparison to the track biased sports car that you're used to. A massive torque spread even from the smallest 5.7 litre engine makes them really easy to use as a daily driver. They're probably a fair bit more reliable than the Lotus too ! Try one, you may like it or you may not, but if you do like it you'll find plenty of friends here.

well i will be honest i did like the car for the wheels and the system, very much into the modification seen, and trying to get the lotus hard core to see all modification arent that bad ha ha ha

but as i am moving house i dont really have much to play with on price so dont intend to shell out much if any cash on top

thankyou for the advice, btw my lotus is a daily drive and has never gone wrong, he he he he he,,,,god there lotus stories ha ha ha ha

but i assume the v8 block is very very reilable in the corvette

The V8 is dead reliable. You can easily import a set of rims from the States. I've just paid $1150 for a set of four 18 x 8" rims for my Z28 and that was about £800 when I imported. The carriage was about £400. It would be a bit cheaper now as the exchange rate is high.

Moving from the stock 16's on 50 profiles on my Z28 to the 35 profile 18's gives a marginally harsher ride and more tramlining but better grip. Harder to balance the wheels too.

Like the others say, there was no Chopper edition. and the price is high for a '98. In general, you will find with GM products that they improve them every year so the later you can afford, the better.
