Tuscans: Silverstone

Michael Caine returned to show 'em how it's done

Richard Hay in the pit lane on Saturday

Andy Holden (Griff2be) had a great battle with Peter Wheeler

Caine dominated

Sunday's race at Silverstone saw the welcome return of former Tuscan ace Michael Caine. Caine will be known to many thanks to his exploits in TVR's GT cars in recent years including the might Speed 12 and more recently at Le Mans in the De Walt T400R.

Caine was in the De Walt car normally piloted by Richard Stanton and immediately set out his stall by placing it on pole position ahead of Richard Hay. David Mason and Phil Keen took the second row with Chris Stockton and Lee Caroline on the third row.

A damp track made for difficult tyre choices with wets being the tyre of choice in the end. The start demonstrated just how difficult the conditions were with the 450bhp+ monsters slithering away. Mason got a good start but the Hay and Caroline both struggled to get away.

Caine took the lead followed by Mason and Phil Keen and Hay. It didn't take long for Caine to break away and leave the following pack to fight amongst themselves. The best battle was between Keen and Mason with Keen slipping past early in the race. The tussle between them continued and David Mason pulled a spectacular move out of the bag as he drove round the outside of Keen through Luffield eventually holding position and gaining the run on Keen up the home straight.

Former front runners Caroline and Stockton both struggled. Caroline raced hard with Ben Samuelson, twitching in the wet conditions as he overtook approaching Copse. Stockton meanwhile had gearbox problems and had to limp around in fifth gear, finally bringing it home in 9th place.

Michael Caine maintained his lead and despite Mason catching there weren't enough laps for Mason to mount a serious attach on the lead and it was Caine's day.

Torrential rain put pay to the second race of the day which will now take place at Snetterton in June.

Did anybody else go to Silverstone on Sunday ?

It absolutely hammered down after the first Tuscan race, I'm not surprised they canned the second. A jetski would have been more appropriate. I gave up at 3.30 and trudged back to the car, absolutely sodden.

Did manage to seek some shelter in the TVR hospitality awning where a very kind Ben Samuelson offered us lunch. What a nice bloke. Spotted Ted & Mrs Ted in there too, now I know what you get up to Ted when you're not stuck in front of the PC, all those free lunches - it must be tough on the waistline !

I was about, but when I looked, they had an 'invited guests' only board out.

Probably put it up when they saw me approach and took it down when they saw me leave!

I ran my spare, which had been fitted with a new selector shaft after the Donington shunt.

The Race 2 box from Donington (Darren's box) had a sheared main shaft, hence why I only had 5th for that race. I had that repaired for him.

I had my main box rebuilt and picked it up on Friday night. Chris Stockton blew his box on the start of the race at Silverstone - we re-fitted my main box and I lent Chris my spare to get him out for Race 2 - the one that was rained off. It seems I was the only person in the paddock with a working spare box - I like Chris and was happy to do him a favour - you never know when you're going to need one back!!

All clear?

Wondered who was piloting car No 6, I was standing next to your loyal supporters wearing 'Andy Holden Team No 6' fleeces during the race, think we all enjoyed your battle with Mr Wheeler!

Sorry to those looking for the PH banner and tea and biccies. I couldn't find anywhere to hang the banner outside the pit garage. In hindsight I should have wacked a sticker on the door or some't.

Live and learn

You'll have been with my main sponsors, IMR, who had the fleeces/coats made up. I enjoyed the battle too!

Programme 2 - Silverstone
29/04/04 6.30pm SSExtra
29/04/04 9.00pm SSExtra
30/04/04 01.00am SS2
30/04/04 11.00am SS3

Might change as we only had the one race which lasted just 15 minutes. For a 30 minute programme.

On the other hand they could do in depth coverage of that race and cover more than the front few....

Points after Round 3 - the two guest drivers (Caine and Hartshorn) were not eligible to earn points, so everyone else moves up

Philip Keen 1st 69
Richard Hay 2nd 68
Lee caroline 3rd 67
David Mason 3rd 67
Darren Dowling 5th 59
Chris Stockton 6th 56
Tim Hood 6th 56
Ben Samuelson 8th 54
Pete Osbourne 9th 42
Rob Talbot 10th 40
Gerard Coakley 11th 32
Charlie Kemp 12th 28
Andy Holden 12th 28
Bob Ross 14th 27
Peter Wheeler 15th 25
Nathan Freke 16th 18
Richard Stanton17th 15

Just shows how costly a DNF is in the Tuscans. My DNF at Donington probably cost me 16 or 17 points
