Supras are great for this, massively strong bottom ends, theres been a few with standard internals with uprated turbos pushing out close to or over 1000 bhp.

However because of this and the whole bodykit phase and being relatively cheap, its almost impossible to get a nice one.

Now for me to get a nice standard one im looking the thick end of 10k just to get one that hasnt been barried too badly. It will be worth it though.

If it was my money, and if it was my cup of tea, I'd be buying a Supra or a Skyline. If you're going for huge boost, you may as well start with the biggest, strongest engine you can in the best package and for me that would be those two.

If you are just making a list, Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo - another that examples of have made 1000BHP on stock internals.

If you're looking for something to buy it's probably not the easiest suggestion.

No, stock conrods aren't overly strong. I don't think much over 300BHP is viable.

I call BS on the Supra making 1000BHP on standard internals, gearbox yes, engine no.

I'll nominate the trusty MX-5, many have been turbo'd using good quality bolt on kits and have gone from zero boost/ 116BHP to plenty of boost/ over 200BHP

To do what though? As in what's you're objective?

More boost needs more fuel. And turbos can only operate at 'x' levels. Then you have the engine internals to worry about.

GM Duramax and Cummins diesel truck engines are very tunable. So is the 2003/4 mustang Cobra. Stock block running compound boost will take around 1100rpm.

Turn up the boost on any forced induction engine. But if you don't adjust fueling, engines will go bang.

Saab 2.3s are famously capable of big power on standard internals. As for 1000bhp supras they will gave given up standard internals at about 600bhp.

For what it's worth, redline magazine did a feature a few years ago about engines that you could double the power output from on standard internals.

First thought was something Japanese but the Saab suggestions are interesting too.

BMW 530/535d...not too shoddy to start with. Likes a good remap, like a bear likes a good dump in the woods

Dependant on revision, you'll max at 280ish bhp just by turning up the boost, within safe limits.

Do you want the biggest improvement or the biggest bhp number?

Depends on your idea of "silly amounts". For me 20+psi is where that distinction is made and you wouldn't want to run an MR2 Turbo at those kind of pressures without a forged build. I run 12psi on my Rev2 with a steel shafted stage 2 turbo, Greddy intercooler and steel headgasket as well as several less significant modifications. This set up will allow me to run at 16psi without too many issues, but even with those mods at that stage, my standard 440cc injectors will be at the very limit of their efficiency and will need upgrading. In my opinion there are better options for running high boost pressures than an MR2 Turbo.

Lexus V8 is supposed to be very good for this.

Also remember boost is a measure of resistance not flow. A 2.0 litre running 20psi of boost probably isn't flowing as much as a 5.7 V8 running 8psi of boost.

As for high boost. I think diesel tractor puppets run around 90psi+

I love the way pepole think that just banging up the boost makes the better car.

Well, within reason you can get a fair few horses extra, depending on the internals. Certainly better bang for buck than an exhaust or fancy pants induction kit.

My Sierra Cosworth was running appox 330-350bhp on a standard, albeit rebuilt engine. That compares to 204bhp from the factory. However even though the engine contained standard crank/pistons/rods/valves, many other parts were changed to acheive this such as strengthened head gasket, bigger turbo, different injectors, bigger intercooler, different MAP sensor, different ignition, etc etc. The internet would have you beleive you just 'turn the boost up', but that isn't anywhere near the truth when getting much more power.
