Im looking to do an oil change on a 110k miles audi 4.2 v8 (NA)

The book tells me it needs to meet certain VW specs, fair enough i can narrow my search on opieoils with that info.

But would semi do? or do i need fully synth? and 10w40 or 5w30? I suspect either is good.

Any suggestions from those more educated than I would be appreciated.

My current feeling is semi will be fine and the different between the 2 viscosity's will be next to nothing.

IMO older cars need good oil at least as much as new cars.

surely at 110k it's barely run in??

10w40 synth should be fine.

Fully synth 5w30 I'd have thought, check your handbook or with Opie

Some VAG stuff is very sensitive to the type of oil used. Maybe that only applies to diesel VAG?

I was going to ask the very same thing, except my old dear has done 240K on the 4.2 V8. Still use the same oil or do I need something different?

Just keep using the same stuff, unless its suffering from low oil pressure.

If it says fully synth then stick to fully synth. Grade wise, there is little difference between 10w40 and 5w30 so don't worry about that. If you're worried it might need a special oil, check the specifications listed in the handbook with a lubricant supplier. They will soon tell you what will or won't do the job. In the majority of cases, even budget oils meet the spec for most cars.

Oil requirements do not change with the age of a vehicle, although regular oil changes help any engine to last longer.
