How can I fit in an 911
Discussion
Hi, I am seriously considering getting a 911, I like the look of the 3.2's (I think the whale tail and frog-eyes look great – childhood dream car), but I have a problem:
I'm 6'7" tall and had a test drive in a 1985 coupe, I really enjoyed it, but wasn't in a driving position that I could live with for long.
I had the seat all the way back and as low as it could get, the back reclined so far I could only just get to the wheel and my head was still on the roof. Also my knees were wrapped around the steering wheel.
I was going to get a smaller steering wheel, but know that wouldn’t be enough to be able to live with the driving position; does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to the car to make me fit?
Also, does anyone know if the newer cars have more space inside?

The 996 has more room inside than a 3.2. Not absolutely sure about the 964 and 993, I think they are the same. Did the car you were in have a sunroof? If it did look at getting one without.
You may like to consider a bucket seat if you can get the seat lower. You should also consider a smaller steering wheel and/or a steering wheel boss moving the steering wheel an inch or so further out from the dash board, giving you knees more room.

The "1985" may not have had height adjustable seats, it was a bit of a change over year, there was also a change to the type of seat fitted from a fatter more angular seat to a more slender model.
There are also 2 mounting options for the seats to put them closer to, or further from the steering wheel. It only changes the position by an inch or so but it makes a surprising difference.
A simple job to change with an allen key, (10 mm socket on older cars).

I'm 6'5" (and about 18 stone). I'm looking at a 964RS and am going to do the following: recaro pole position seat in place of the original, mounted lower and further back than the standard seat. Smaller diameter wheel with a 65 degree dish, coupled with an SPA removable boss - which mounts the wheel about 50mm closer to the driver. This should help.
You will definitely have to consider moving the wheel out from the dash, as porsche may as well have glued it straight to the dash in the factory - it's that close as standard!! Should give you more knees room.

I'm only 6'2", but I found the pre-996 cars have a much better driving position in LHD than RHD. A steering wheel boss and a smaller Momo wheel helped it clear my knees. There is no doubt that the 996 is a more roomy car overall.
You'll find that cars without sunroofs have more headroom too.
Cars with buckets (like the 964RS and the 968CS) will have sockets that enable you too mount the seat lower, and removable cusions that also enable you to get a bit more headroom.
Good luck! A Porsche is always the right decision

Thanks everyone for your suggestions... a 993 or 996 are a bit out of my price range, but I will have a look at them (just to see how much things have changed).
The car in question did have a sun roof and I do know that can reduce head height a bit, the seats were electrically height adjustable and I set it as low as possible but the idea of getting a recardo seat hadn't occurred to me. Are they much lower than normal seats?
Fergus, your suggestions sound very sensible; I may well follow that route too.
