944 sunroof removal
Discussion
I've just bought a new sunroof seal for my wifes '86 944. How the hell do I remove the roof to fit the seal?? It is an electric one and I'm sure it is removable but can't work out how. Releasing the clips at the front make it loose, but it still won't come out.
Her old 924 had a manual one that just lifted out but I'm damned if I can work this one out.

To remove roof, close roof fully, then continue to depress switch until the rack disengages, then release front clips as you mentioned, and lift out rear first, if the roof will not release in this manner, you will need to "operate", peel back headlining carefully, exposing mechanism retaining screws, remove same noting positions, this will release the rack and allow removal, only nec. if roof racks have previously been removed and not refitted correctly

To remove the roof, first make sure it is closed.
Then turn the ignition key to position 1 and press the up button for the sunroof. The arms will actually retract into the roof and you can lift the sunroof out (lossening the front catches).
When replacing the roof place it into position and secure the front catches. As soon as you start the car the arms should rise up and lock in the closed position.
There are three microswitches in the boot which control all this. They often go out of alignment which means it does not always work as it's supposed to.
