Hello all,

New 993 owner here! Just picked the car (A 1995 Carrera 4) up and am loving it very much! Just a quick query for this forum:

I'm planning to fitt the 18" turbo alloys to my car, and read earlier in the forum that some adjustments may be required to the car to cater for this: Specifically:

If 18 inch wheels were fitted then there neds to be a steering brace fitted?

Is this the case or can this just be added to the car with no adjustments?

Thanks for any feedback in advance!

I think you will need the brace. It's about £40 and can be fitted quite easily. I don't know the part number, but a main dealer should know about it.

If you go to

http://forums.rennlist.com

and do a search in the archives for 'steering brace' you will see many many threads on the subject over years. This has been discussed in great detail over there.

In short, yes you will need the brace (if you follow Porches advice) as there was a redesign to the steering rack in later cars. It is a thin piece of metal, and I couldn't really see how it would help much (maybe if you track the car a lot then you might have a problem with the extra stresses if you didn't fit it??), but hey ho. Takes approx 10 mins to fit.

Wouldn't count on an OPC having a clue what you are talking about, they certainly didn't when I enquired (and even pointed them in the direction of their technical service bulletin). Try someone like Peter and Craig at GT-One, they did mine.

the fronts will probably fit ET52 but the rears probably won't ET44ish, narrow body ET is 65.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses so far, going back through the Porsche forum's this seems a very common issue for 993 guys, we must all have an issue with standard 17" wheels

Prof: Yes those are the 18" wheels I am looking for, do you know anyone that can supply?

It seems from reading the forum's that if you can afford the real Porsche 18" alloys,it's worth doing a they're weigh less, I've read the replica's are a lot heavier and can impact handling? As Imvery skint from just recently purchasing the car (worth every penny!). Can any one recommend a good replica brand?

Cheers Simon

Simon, I would try and stick with a genuine Porsche product when upgrading to 18 inch wheels. The SportClassic II, SportDesign and Turbo I were all Porsche Tequipment options for the 993 model range. Try and see if you can get a good genuine set of refurbished ones.

Jasmine Motorsport usually carry sets of good used ones, so do Design 911, but its worth having them checked. Be careful and make sure you get the correct offsets for the 993 model.

I agree. Simon at Jasmine (01282 697171) was most helpful when I enquired about a set of refurbished Sports Classic 2's. He should also give you a decent price for your existing rims as well.

I've recently bought a 1995 993, and I've just discovered it has Turbo alloys fitted. The rear offset is ET47 which in my opinion makes them look terrible.

The centre of the rim sticks out about a 1CM past the wheelarch. The previous owner fitted 255 tyres on the back to stop them sticking out even further than the rim. The tyre actually sits about 8mm inside the rim edge which also looks odd.

So, Turbo alloys on a std 993 look crap, beleive me. I've just bought a set of correctly fitting split rims from PWS.

18" Turbo wheels with the wrong offsets might look crap, but IMHO correctly fitting ones don't.

Quite. I've got 18" Turbo wheels on my 993 C4 and they look superb.

Matt

There were no 'Turbo' alloys produced with ET47, so these will be clones - its ET40 for wide bodies. Genuine hollow spokes have metal valves, seam on inside of spoke.

Re rack brace, details can be seen at carnewal-europe.com, upgrades, 993, bottom of list ....

Cheers, Maurice

Thanks for all your advise guys, I think Jasmine Motorsport & a new steering brace may be the way forward, am going to drop them a line to see what they've got in stock
in terms of the genuine Porsche alloys.

I've had the car for a week and am getting used to the standard Cup 2 alloys looks it has, though Matt's car has reminded me they look great with the upgrade aswell so
I think the Cups are getting traded in!

Apologies for the late post ...the joy of working late ... at least I can stretch the legs on the car (ahem) on the way home without the bother of much traffic. Cheers Simon

I'm about to buy a Porsche 993 TT, but the transaction and deal is taking some time due to checks. It has Gemballa or Techart wheels on it-standard Turbo size (which look OK I guess). Well phoning around the previous owners I've come across the original alloys, which the guy has offered me with new Pirelli P zeroes for about a grand GPB-is that a good deal?

With new P zer0 that is a reasonable deal...the new tyres are probably worth £700 alone.
The real TT alloys are lighter than the 18" Turbo look wheels that were the option on Carreras.
The TT ones have hollow spokes, one way to confirm this is the flat rather rounded spokes when looking at the inside of the wheel...
I would go for these wheels,,keep the Gembellas for track work with sticky tyres or bang 'em out..you should cover the cost of TT alloys assuming there is some life left in the rubber.
