Road rage murder

A driver was stabbed to death during a row over a minor traffic accident. The confrontation began after two cars were involved in a low-speed collision in a residential street.

The victim, who was on his own, got out of his car to be confronted by several men from the other vehicle.

One of the men pulled out a knife and within seconds the victim was lying face down on the pavement suffering massive loss of blood. Police today described the attack as " horrific," adding: "It is unbelievable that a man has been murdered over something so trivial."

The incident in Ilford happened so quickly that even witnesses who saw what happened have been unable to give a proper description of the killer or those with him. The only description police have of the attackers is that they are black and their car was either blue or purple.

Gian Basi, 74, who lives nearby, said: "The men who stabbed him just turned around, got back in their car and drove off. It was so quick and brutal. There was barely a scratch on the car."

Mr Basi said his 10-year-old granddaughter had been traumatised by what she saw. The attack happened at about 7.30 yesterday evening after the victim's Vauxhall Vectra was involved in a "low-speed impact" with a Ford Fiesta on Argyle Road at the junction with Beale Road. The cars continued along Argyle Road before stopping. After the stabbing, the Ford turned left on to Northbrook Road.

Some witnesses have told police the Fiesta driver was joined by a passenger, others have said two or three passengers were involved.

The victim has not yet been identified but police say he is of Mediterranean origin. An ambulance arrived within minutes but the man had already lost consciousness by the time paramedics started treating him. He is said to have lost "an awful lot of blood" and died at King George's Hospital, Ilford.

Today officers from the Met's Serious Crime Directorate issued a plea for anybody who might have more information about the attack to come forward.

A spokesman said: "This was a man travelling in his car on his own who was in a minor crash and he has been killed. We are treating the matter as murder."

Police are today conducting house to house inquiries in the area. Anyone with information is asked to ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I despair at the mindlessness of some people
