M3, Junc 2 Westbound > How many plod !!!!!!!

8am this morning, on a bridge overlooking the M3 heading west just after the M25, 8 plod with a laser camera overlooking each of the 3 westbound lanes.....followed by 1 mile later in a layby on the M4 just by the side of another bridge, 5 Plod Volvos parked up, all ready to move.
Great value added there guys.....NOT. Waste of space in rush hour.

Seems to be a bit of a push for revenue on at the moment.
Yesterday at about 4pm on Castelnau in Barnes there was a motorbike cop with a coat draped over the front windscreen and blue lights and something else draped over the paniers, hiding behind a van parked in the bus lane under some bushes with a laser gun.
Many thanks to the van driver with the overactive beam.
And after this they still expect respect from the public?
Respect is earned quite simply.

Are you sure it was speed? Sounds very much like an ANPR setup for road tax to me: high vehicle density, slow speeds, camera for each lane, hard shoulder to stop people on....

Westbound after the M25 is not Junction 2. It is Junction 5 at Langley.
This section is covered by Thames Valley Police.
Thames Valley Police do not have any Volvo patrol cars.
Thames Valley Police do not operate a policy of speed traps on motorways where drivers have to be stopped in the way you suggest!
The nearest force that operate Volvo patrol cars are Surrey Police. They would not be in the practice of speed enforcement in TVP area.
How could you tell what hand held device was being held if you were travelling at between 50mph and 70mph and the operators holding them were at least 17 feet 6 inches above your head (and that would be if they were lying down)?

so if mr brazzi was heading east, he could have spotted the bib posse overlooking the westbound M4 as described around... ooo lets say... junction 2?
instead of nitpicking, mr gone, how about addressing the point? what were they most likely doing, or were they just wasting our money?

I posted last night that I had driven M4 at this stretch not that long ago! Not looking for "quite good 'speeder' in wrong country" were they? Except that I am back up here - upsetting the talivan twits down the road again! 
"different things going on?" NOT.... those "unexploded jam donuts" around there again! Perhaps our Darling "sun-tanned toothsome chocolate Cornetto" (per Harry Mount's "Commons Sketch" yesterday) or similar politico plank was planning to travel on this stretch.

I am chilled, really I am . Good to chat anyway Matt fair enough, mr gone, but twas not i who jumped to the conclusion that mr brazzi was heading west this morning and then tried to rubbish his story.
fair enough tony, but i'm sure you realise that the days when you could say "trust the police, dont ask questions, of course we'll use your money wisely" have gone.

Surely being this ambiguous is damaging to the police as well?
The original poster believes they got caught by a laser gun. Whether that is the case or not, as put by Gone, we shall never know (unless a NIP appears through the door...)
So if hundreds of people are driving down that road and see the display of officers pointing their equipment down at the road () then you have a lot of people believing that they have been caught / almost caught speeding and will be pissed off fuelling the current downward trend of respect for the police and the police system in general.
So why not put signs up stating what they are doing? If its an ANPR check, put a sign up. If its a laser trap, put a sign up!
Even if there are oiks that now know their game is up because they are untaxed / uninsured and are about to be pulled over, there is little they can do about avoiding a sign short of driving off the grass verge as they have already been caught.
If Joseph Public sees that the police are doing something in their favour (ANPR checks) then it will help public support.
However I fear that this idea is so simple that it will never be implemented.
People will always be suspicious of what they dont understand. The forces are doing a damned good job of making sure that people dont understand what they are doing, therefore its a problem that they are creating.
