Ask the 'expert' on BBC news about camera efficacy

Look for "Ask the expert" down at the bottom of the page. Put your questions to the 'expert'.
My question was this:
"After several years of speed cameras, does the "regression to mean" seen in casualty figures across the UK (particularly in camera-happy counties like Northants and Essex) not prove that cameras are completely ineffective?"

I think they do make the roads safer. I'm almost always over the speed limit until I see a speed camera - then I slow down and speed up again after passing one.
Err, that's a well thought out argument. You speed up after you have passed the camera but you still feel it makes the road safer? This country appears to be over-run with mentaly challenged lentalista.

Not sure but I think that may have been a windup comment that one of the addams family (BBC editors) let in accidentally.
Failing that it does go to prove that there are some real wits out there...
"Road deaths have not fallen significantly since cameras were introduced - speed does not kill, bad driving and bad road design kills. A camera will not stop people driving too close within the limit, does not pick up cyclists jumping red lights, or bad drivers. Cameras are there purely to raise money and pander to those who seem to believe cars should be banned altogether. Instead, invest in better training, licence retests, and proper policing involving people not robots."
