"Reports on speed cameras (Mail) illustrate the wise words of French political economist, Frederic Bastiat, that, "It is impossible to introduce into society a greater change and a greater evil than this: the conversion of the law into an instrument of plunder."

Safety camera partnerships claim not to be money-making organisations, but to be promoting driver safety through the use of cameras. Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling has claimed that, "The best camera is one that never issues a ticket because that means that everyone is driving safely and within the speed limit."

But the speed camera league table clearly shows they aren't working: more than 1.5 million tickets were issued in 2002 the figures are increasing.

Mr Darling is also mistaken because speed and a lack of safety aren't always related. What about the drunks, the unlicensed, those lacking a road-worthy car? If they're below the speed limit they won't trigger the camera."

Now I wonder where that came from?
