So here is the thing, today approx 3.30pm M6 southbound a few miles before Charnock Services.
I see one hidden traffic officer in a 4x4 perched by the motorway where the Traffic Police usually sit, I am sure he is loving watching people slam all on as they spot him thinking he is the actual police and therefore having a point to his life, problem is though that not 200yds down the road are 2, yes 2, broken down cars with several people stood by there cars, oh and another one northbound with 1 person and 2 kids causing drivers to slow down. All in full view of the "Traffic Officer"
here comes the rant..................
At what fking point do these idiots decide that they are so fking important that they cannot help/assist/shelter the stranded drivers and are better placed to sit on there arses and pretend to be the people they will never ever have the balls to be.
Funny how not 3 hours earlier they were happy to deploy a rolling road block with 3, yes 3 cars to shift a bucket (yes just one bucket as I was the lead truck in lane 1 and witnessed it) from the central reservation northbound at Preston/Tickled Trout junction. Words utterly fail me and I have seen yet more reasons why drivers should think these people are just jumped up morons who never made it into the police and have issues about it!!
I await the usual rubbish, judgemental and justification responses but I feel better for the rant!!

I think they are a waste of public money. Saw an advert for the position once and it was about 25k. I would rather see them scrap them and employ half the number of real police officers with the money they save.

I make a point of increasing my speed when I see the tell-tale black/yellow..rather than the rather more 'squeaky-bottom inducing' blue/yellow..

  1. How did you see a hidden HATO vehicle? Was it hidden or not?
  2. How do you know he was "loving" watching people "think he is the actual police"? Are you psychic?
  3. How do you know a HATO patrol wasn't en route to the breakdown on the other carriageway?
  4. If the breakdowns on your side of the road were "not 200 yds down the road", then the HATO was shielding them, yes?
  5. They cannot assist the stranded drivers other than to ensure their welfare and safety, because the breakdown and recovery companies would scream bloody murder.
  6. How many cars would you use for an RRB? Based on what?
  7. Have you written to the HA to complain about this?
I'm not a HATO and nor do I work for the HA.

However, I do understand that working safely on the motorway is a lot more complex than J. Random Motorist might lead themselves to believe.

They and the police no longer sit with people once they are dealt with as the lights on the vehicles actually draw people towards them. Advice is given welfare checked then they are left.

The hato may have been waiting to put a rolling road on when recovery arrived or a closure of a lane.

The hato 's are now primarily tasked with waiting at fixed points to reduce fuel costs.

Clearing Debris is done as described because people swerve to avoid it or hit it and damage their cars. Swerving at 80 To avoid a bucket is bad for your health. Even a bucket could shatter or break and cause a puncture.

Hato's in my experience are profesiovak bunch and the ones I work with have improved safety and incident management tons. They have also freed up officers to do police work.

I'd not managed to juxtapose songs by Tom Jones and Harry Belafonte in my head before, so O am truly grateful to the OP for creating the circumstances for this to happen.
