I didn't buy mine, the newer supplied ones fall apart in six months. The older ones that I have are pre-politically correct versions that have sharp edges on them.

In theory, because I have metal numbers pushed into an epaulette, if I am rolling around fighting with someone for whatever reason, I may hurt them. (Or myself) I do enough of that anyway so irrelevant really.

STAY AWAY FROM SHARP THINGS THEY MAY HURT YOU.....

think I knew that already though.

There are a couple of items of 'police' kit that I have purchased myself that the job provide for free, but that particular kit is crap.

As for the epaulettes...£5 a pair. I will have made that by sitting on my arse at the side of the road watching the traffic for 15 mins on a bank holiday. The epaulettes will last for about 10 years..so time well spent...

I'm astonished that the embroidered ones exist, if they do solely for the reasons stated above.

The world has gone bloody mad.

No sure what you mean...

It's cheaper for the police forces to buy metal numbers than to embroider the numbers...

Derbyshire and a couple of other forces supply embroidered ones, but the rest have the metal/plastic ones. Any tailoring firm will do the embroidering..

I mean that if you are having to use embroidered epaulettes to avoid the possibility to harming suspects then the world has gone absolutely barmy.

I'm absolutely with you now...sorry...

The injuring the public during scuffles is a serious consideration...we are supposed to deal with drunken, mental, violent nutters who are intent of injuring themselves, the public and the police, but if they end up with a mark on them following arrest, us police had better make sure the report reads well...Mine always do..plenty of experience covering my ass...

Anyway the epaulettes..the injury to others is a small reason, but not the main reason. For me the main reason, is the metal/plastic one ride up when putting on body armour, then the armour presses the numbers into my shoulders for the rest of the shift.

I also like to be a bit different and as 97% of the force has the metal number, mine are embroidered..

With that in mind I have often wondered why medical staff dont just inject a load of Ketamine into the idiots that play up whilst pissed in Casualty.

They'd have a job proving that one

plotless...Mungo is right...the shoulder area is where the majority of our violent 'customers' heads usually end up. Unarmed defensive tactics involve being 'in-close' with the suspect and sharp shoulder badges can cause injury. (Personally, I'm surprised that each force hasn't discontinued metal numbers. I can only suspect that the occasions where injury have occured aren't too frequent; perhaps good luck.

I've have numerous violent encounters out on the street and in houses. I don't consider myself a 'hard' guy, but if I've got to sort a situation out, I will sort it out and not lose.

You're right...prevention and detterent are much better than cure and all that...

I like to see the chavscum part like the waves when I walk through with 'Max' my 49kgs ex-police German Shepherd Dog, Moses like...

I never get into violent encounters on my days off as I live in a nice area, I'm choosey who my friends are and I don't frequent places where knobheads might be. However, when I'm taking the Queen's shilling, I don't have the luxury of such things and have to get 'stuck it'...

Couldn't remember if you're Bib or not Plotless..had to check your profile..see that you're not..

and Mungo is a dwarven dixon of dock green impersonator with a propensity towards under bridge dwellers of the night.

Only joking also...
