RE: PH Blog: let's talk about SPECS
Discussion
Read about half the thread. Came to a few conclusions:
1. Lots of misinformation
2. A very minor bit of useful information
3. The pogo seems like a great piece of kit
4. It seems like we are busy spending tremendous amounts of energy to solve a problem that, arguably, doesnt need solving
5. Cruise control is probably your best bet
In saying the above, my feelings are pretty downbeat about it all. Why on earth do we have the ever-present nanny state? Camera tech seems to be improving year on year, with drivers becoming more stressed as a result.
Does having a person piloting a 2 ton machine in a stressed condition help or hinder road traffic accidents? I suspect the answer is no.

It only stresses those trying to break the law/beat the system. Should people who want to disobey the traffic laws help or hinder a reduction in accidents?

Has anyone on here actually been sent a NIP for speeding through a SPECS? I have yet to hear of a single case of anyone ever being caught by these things.
One of our managers received two NIPs from the set up on the M62 one morning (4am) last year. One eastbound (61mph) and one westbound (62mph) and both detailed the average speed over the specific sections. They also successfully read his mis-represented number plate.
Just remembered that at a Highways Agency do I went on, we were shown by a VOSA rep that the fixed ANPR cameras can be used in conjunction with the in-carriageway traffic flow devices to weigh your vehicle. If your axle weights are out, expect a pull further down the road!

I just tend to sit at 50mpg on the Pogo GPS thoroughout the SPECS area, winding up the bellends in their Audi Tdi's behind me, then drop a couple of cogs and absolutely hoof it as soon as the final camera is overhead.
Childish, but amusing.
One but not the other IMO. Why not just move over if people want to pass? I'd like to see lane-hoggers, non-indicators etc being sent on courses where they would hopefully be taught some basic manners.Childish, but amusing.

You think you'd slow down, pull into lane 2 and happily go slower than you want to, so that others can go faster than they are allowed? Why should you be delayed any more than those who want to go faster?

if spec cameras do worry you then there is no better speed camera device than the pogo alert plus for warning you of these. The Pogo Alert+ offers extra warnings for SPECS cameras, it will work out your personnel average speed and display this on the screen, so you can drive through the the spec zones with total peace of mind knowing what your actual average speed is you are doing.
please see the screen shots of this:
hope that helps, if you need any more info on these devices please contact me as my profile states.
Thats all very well, but as has been mentioned before in this thread, you don't know which cameras they're using to work out the average- ie with 5 camera in all, 1-2/ 2-4/ 1-5 etc. As the pogo will never be able to know this, it can only be an estimation that you are 'ok to speed up' as if the section that you drive fast in is actually between the only two cameras that they're measureing....you're f**ked.please see the screen shots of this:
hope that helps, if you need any more info on these devices please contact me as my profile states.
And in addition, driving well over 50mph in an average zone in just dangerous- as many people say on this thread, most are using cruise control and 'relaxing' hence concentration is low in addition to all the other roadworks hazards...

Do they know something I don't??
Sounds like it. Why not stick your cruise at 56mph?Not that I wish to tempt fate but having driven through these (as most of us have) numerous times..often for no apparent reason (do you really need to do 50 on a clear motorway at 3am?), I have never been caught being naughty and I have never obeyed the demands of the vast machine as I'm an individual, who has some degree of sense and dare I say driving talent, along with an ample helping of self preservation so I believe I am more than capable of deciding how I drive my car.
My technique for success is simple.
1) Spot signs warning of upcoming pointless enforcement
2) Continue doing whatever legal speed I'm doing
3) Monitor the position of any high sided vehicle that will shield my wrong doing from 1 such device
4) Match speed to go 'undetected' past said device
5) Resume speed and repeat for duration
