Yeah, I didn't know of Dereks explanation.

I had seen the name and read if aloud as 'Half He Hates'.

And in 'Two Sides of the Force - Half He Hates' - implying that he only liked one side.
That's a much better explanation than mine. I think I'll pinch it. Much less prosaic than mine.

Sorry Derek, that's just how I saw it.

Please don't apologise. I thought it very good. I assume you do crosswords?

I remember when I submitted an article to the force's magazine for crosswords specific to departments. There was one where the clues went up and down only: helicopter unit. For those in strategic planning the crosword went round and round in circles, and for divisional commanders who were dishing out duties, their crossword had lots of spaces to fill but with too few clues. One I rather liked was the CID one: you didn't fill in the boxes with letters but merely ticked them regardless of clues. That went down about as well as could be expected.

I'll let the traffic one go for now. It caused more than a little bitterness.

After it was published everyone got in the act and after being chuffed by mine, everytime there was another one put forward it was much better. Story of my life.

So I appreciate your interpretation of my nom de plume. Rather good in fact.

I very rarely do crosswords, and I have to admit I wouldn't have spotted it if it hadn't have been that someone had pointed out there was a pun. I went looking and that was what I came up with.

Glad you like it. After your explanation I felt a bit silly at first. But two sides and Halves/half stood out to me.

It's also an anagram of "Yeah, a vestry" - which for reasons known to Derek and me will likely bring a wry smile to his lips.

Other anagrams can be made from the letters.

Derek, have you considered publishing using lulu.com or similar? Self publishing ain't just for the vain any more...

Excellent reading Derek. I had the Harvey Yates as 'Our V8s' so not quite right, I guess I won't make a detective either!

Just got this! Don't know if to read it now, or save it for the hours of sitting on a plane in a few weeks time.

Thank you OP otherwise I would have missed this one.I downloaded and started to read last night, interested to note Derek went to Eynsham Hall in 1975 then to see Brian Teagles name, heck we were on the same course! I can still see Brians loping gate especially on the right pace, dunno how he managed to walk let alone march. The PTI from my force, TVP, Taylor.. Mad as a fish but you would never say that to his face. My first day there arriving late came screaming down the drive to see some PC`s from the senior course stood out the front of the building, braked to a halt leaving tyre marks to ask directions, given, but also pointed out I had desecrated the parade square! Happy days.

So you and me on the same course, Bob? What's your full name? If I remember rightly, TVP had a recruiting drive on at the time and you mustered more on the course than I've ever seen even on early turn.

Please don't tell anyone how bad I was at marching.

How did Teagle get on? He was a lovely bloke. I remember the drill pig's bewildered gaze. Something out of a horror film. I remember too the relief flooding through me as I realised I wouldn't be the worst one there.

Hi Derek. I was in a class with Geoff Rose, TVP, and a Herts chap called Protheroe as my Sgts. There was a City PC in my class but cannot remember his name. I recall an Irish chap that would have been overweight dripping wet as a bantamweight who was probably the worst marcher. He was TVP but did not last. In fact most of my course dropped away after PTS. I believe that a TVP Cadet of the year called Bellfield went on to be C/Supt, but the PTI hated him, I liked that PTI! He and I were the only ones that I know that went the distance. Was here with a TVP bloke who could not wake up so he had the biggest alarm clock I have ever seen in green, his name was Dixon and I dubbed him therefore `Dixon of clock green` Another TVP had the largest head in the west and wore a cap for weeks until a company that made Firemans helmets knocked up a size 8 and a bit. Need to look out the photo I have somewhere. TVP did have a drive on, but I was a Cadet so just drifted in on gaining age. Certainly they needed to recruit as TVP were bleeding staff and 20+ a week were leaving at one point, that would never happen again would it! Send us an email if you want to stroll down memory lane again. People on here should be exempt from our rose tinted ramblings I am sure.

I'm another who'd buy it in a heartbeat if there were a paper copy, I have neither time nor interest in any sort of electronic reading device.

Derek...... take a look at lulu.com, I helped my Uncle publish his novel through there a couple of years ago and it is so,so simple and it opens up a whole new market.

Happy to help you get it there if you wish?
