Is a VW DSG gearbox considered an automatic or a manual ?

As per title, I have a work colleague, that is a nice guy but to be frank not the sharpest tool in the box. He has just purchased a brand new Polo for his girlfriend, it is the DSG gearbox model. His girlfriend has an auto only licence but the DSG seems to be a clutch less manual. Does anyone know what the situation is regarding this?

Thanks for that, I didn't want him getting stuffed on the deal. The Polo is coming out at 18k which seems a bit spicy to me, but I've looked on the VW website and it seems to be what they go for

If it doesn't have a clutch I think it's automatically (no pun intended) classed as an automatic.

A clutch is something completely different to a clutch pedal.

And not all auto boxes have clutches. That's incorrect.

Why not? They are classed as automatics on the same way a DSG box is, they don't have a clutch pedal do they?

Alot of people seem to ask this question, but anything that can be driven automatic and doesn't have a clutch pedal is an auto

And DSG does have 2 clutches, just not any pedals to operate them!

I had a car with a DSG and it said 'automatic' on the V5.

It's certainly not a clutchless manual. It changes up and down when you hit the redline or get the revs too low, even if you don't want it to.

Almost every automatic since the begining of time. Normal automatics use a torque converter, not a clutch. Hope thats cleared things up for you.

A clutch is defined as 'a frictional coupling device' , of which none of my automatic cars have any : they use fluid couplings and torque convertors .

All traditional automatics have clutches in them - it's how they hold the various parts of the planetary gears in place.

As for automatics that don't have clutches or belt-type variators, I believe Nissan used a toroidal CVT in the Murano that didn't have any clutches at all.

in terms of whether it's an auto or a manual for driving licence reasons it's the presence or absence of a clutch pedal that determines whether it counts as an auto or not ...

They dont use a clutch to connect the engine to the gearbox, but they do use clutches inside the gearbox itself. Hope that's cleared things up for you.
