I was told on my IAM test that it was perfectly accpetable to straight line a roundabout.

Yep big motorway roundabouts, love erm. Also Ponds forge at 2am.

Surely the IAM don't recommend straighlining roundabouts where lane markings are painted on them? The change in grip as you go across the markings would be sufficient reason for me not to do so.

For my purposes the existence of lane marking would not influence me, subject to ensuring that no concern or inconvenience is caused to other road users.

With regard to possible changes in grip as you cross the white lines, again I would not be unduly influenced by that. For the purposes of driving on public roads I think one should not get so near to the limit of adhesion that such a change would present difficulties in controlling the vehicle - or am I expecting too much here?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Y'now, I've been thinking about this, yes, I know, it's dangerous! But roundabouts do have a lot going for them.

A well executed power slide (rear wheel drive - of course) round a reasonably sized one could be quite good. After all, they DON'T have speed camera's! An' whilst you are on it YOU have right of way! AND it's cheaper than a track day! Brilliant! don't know why I haven't thought of it before! 8Pack.

Ooh! Doughnuts anyone?

Apologies for reviving this thread - but I knew I had read about it recently and that it was here somewhere.

Driving home on the A27 around the Chichester ring road last night, there was a scamera van, 2x V70's and another unmarked Volvo in a lay-by immediately after a roundabout. The scamera van looked as though it was set-up and in use. Now they could all have been stopped for a brew & a burger from the mobile greasy-spoon wagon in said lay-by - but at 5:15pm??

So why might they be shooting traffic coming off a roundabout between 2 stretches of NSL rated dual-carriageway!?

Maybe it was ANPR ?

Regret to state I am not so well versed in spotting the difference(s). I know what ANPR is but not what it looks like.

This was a transit type vehicle with 2 side-by-side cameras mounted in the rear at high level (no open doors).

Sound like ANPR to me...

Especially with the addition of vehicles around the corner....

No need for vehicles with speedcameravans as the summons is in the post..

Thanks Street - it's nice to be able to tell the technologies apart.

So this ANPR thing checks the number plates of multiple vehicles simultaneously - and cross-references details with a DVLC database that checks for what? Current tax, current insurance and presumably that that registration actually belongs on that vehicle, yes?
Fiendishly clever technology.

I guess it'll not be long before all these technolgies are rolled into one mobile unit - and by that I mean those of ANPR & speed camera.

Aye..that's about right mate...

It also comes up if the vehicle has been used in crime, if it's stolen, if the keeper/owner is disqualified...

There is something like a 75% success rate with the machine leading to convictions..

Gary,

What happens if you pass an ANPR unit when you don't have a plate on the front of your car. Do they pull you further down the road, assuming there is backup nearby?

there's always back up with ANPR..to provide what is needed...ie: stop of the vehicle...

A car with no registration plate will either come up as a 'error' or the operator inside will just radio through anyway...as per normal...
