I was told the US number 911 also works inthe UK...

Correct. You can make a e-call without a SIM on a barred IMEA......

IIRC it works in Central London and other major cities due to a) the high proportion of US businessbods/tourists who can't be arsed to research emergency procedures in a different country and b) because of the prevalence on British screens of sh!te American 'reality' TV that shows black-and-white yanktanks with 'Dial 911 in Emergency' plastered all over them.

This was heard second-hand so don't quote me...
