Summonsed for 99 on motorway

Good day people,
You may or may not recall a friend of mine who was done for 100mph on the M1 a while ago and I asked advice re the possible outcome.
His summons came today for 99mph (luckily) and he would like to know what to expect if he just avoids wasting everyones time and pleads guilty by post - his worst fear is that he holds his hand up and they ban him all through the mail.
Would turning up at court make any difference whatsoever and is he likely to face a ban anyway or just 3-6 and a decent fine?

Check this on pepipoo, but I think you can only be banned if you turn up in person. So if the summons gives you the option of pleading guilty by post, then doing so would theoretically ensure that you only get a fine and points.
I believe you cannot be banned unless you are there in person....
99 mph, M4 Newport end of Severn Bridge, clear weather light traffic. First ever offence, was very polite to the pursuing officers. Got a £500 fine(apparently depends on how much you earn - believe me I am no millionaire) and 6 points. Lesson learned, buy radar detector and keep speed below 90. All speeding now done on track, loads more fun and no Plod.

I've given him all the info so far and he's quite relieved, he's been lying awake thinking about driving bans for weeks lol!
The amount of advice and information available on PH makes me wonder what I did before I discovered it!

Unless you are challenging always plead guilty by post as you have to be there to be disqualified. If they write back and say you have to turn up then you know you are in trouble

Got pulled over and told "this is a 60 mph limit and I have measured your speed between two fixed points as 88.04 mph. I am going to give you a fixed ticket speeding fine for £60 and three points on your licence". I think the fixed points were those white squares you see painted on the road surface.How do they work? Anybody know?

As you cross the first point, the following Police car operator starts the timer on the Police Pilot average speed calculator. When the Police car passes the same point the operator starts the distance trace. When you pass the second paint mark, the time trace is stopped and when the Police car passes the second paint mark the distance trace is stopped.
The computer now knows the distance and the time it took YOU to cover it, which then immediately displays your average speed.
The minimum distance for this type of check on a road with a limit over 40MPH is 0.125 of a mile. (Not 0.63 of mile quoted on an earlier post)
However these paint marks can be used for static checks, for example a Police car sits on a motorway bridge looking down on the M1, the distance betwen the paint marks is known and is entered into the computer.
Before and after the bridge are paint marks in all 3 lanes. As the target vehicle passes the first paint mark the stopwatch starts and as it passes the second, it is stopped. The computer then works out the average speed. Its that easy.
Just for the record 99MPH on my section of the Motorway is an FPNE and only a summons if applicable (9 points or more etc)

I've always been very dubious of these systems (isn't VASCAR another one?).
They seem extremely open to error/abuse (not that any Police Officer would ever do that?!). I suppose if its backed up by video camera then thats ok, but do all cars equipped with these cars have to be video equipped too?
