ANPR Failing in guildford.
Discussion
Well it looks like Guildfords criminal underclass have wised up to ANPR.
The town currently has a record number of numberplates being stolen from cars.
This f***ks up the ANPR sysyem completey, and causes untold hassle for legitimate motorists as criminals are now using their plates.

Well I'm completely gobsmacked. Whoever would have thought it. Criminals stealing numberplates to prevent themselves being caught? How low can they get, the bounders.
Let's get real. This is a trivial act -- most plates are screwed or stuck on -- and almost untraceable because police are more interested in whether the car is registered/taxed/insured than whether it's the right car for the plates.
Surely someone in authority realised this would happen and is only going to get worse? Perhaps it's part of the plan to get all law-abiding drivers off the road because it's just too much hassle.
Sorry, another depressing day in the office....

and if plates were inside the windows at least they wouldn't be stolen and the car would look smoother and cleaner
No you'd get your window smashed too
Not necessarily. If it was a sticker then it would break with the glass. I suppose one couldtake out the whole window and put it into the same shell ...
Did I miss something?
All the legitimate owner has to do is report the stolen VRM. The number on the plate then gets logged with the DVLA and a marker is set on the ANPR system. Eventually, the chav will drive past a cam blissfully unaware that the plod just further up the road will have been informed that the plate is stolen. The arrest will usually followed up with further charges of no insurance/mot etc.
Result!

Supraman :
Thats great, if the crim leaves the plate on his car for any length of time.
However, for a day or two ( especially if he picks a car that has been left for some time ) its a safe bet.
As most numberplates are now so easy to steal, as they are stick on, it would appear the crims simply nick a new set of plates every day.

Told you it would'nt take long.
All this tagetting criminals using technology is great, until that technology is so easy to fool it becomes a joke. Yes it does catch the stupid scrote, but claiming it'll catch the big (clever) criminals is going one step too far.
I have two green MX5's and there is absolutely nothing stopping me getting another set of plates made up for the other one so I have a cloned car (if I wanted to but I don't as it's not that clever an idea) The system is a complete joke.

Does 'the system' (or an operator) match registration to vehicle type/colour? Would at least mean wrongdoers would have to find a car to match their own?
Went past an ANPR setup in Notingham ealier this week, and as well as the 10-odd coppers at the coned off bit, stood a few feet away towards the van was a copper wandering around holding full-on MP5 submachine gun! Can't say I blame them in Nottm though...
Cheers, Phil

I've seen them twice in the last week or so on the Send bridge junction. I have no problem with it.
Any stats available re their success rate on crim or scrote catching?
Wanna buy a plate local to Guildford

There is no such thing as "stupid scrotes" there is only a stupid scrote.
You would be amazed at how quickly useful information, like how to claim a particular benefit or how to circumvent a particular sort of enforcement becomes modern folklore and hence common practice amongst a certain section of society.
They don't all have to be smart enough to figure something out. Just one of them - the rest is passed on.
Hey - we try a version of it on here!

Number plate theft has always gone on. I don't doubt that ANPR may well make the figures rise. But rest assured, plenty of disqualified, wanted, uninsured etc.. are being caught by ANPR that would otherwise have gone undetected.
Of course. There's good reason for ANPR. But there's no acknowledgement at present that it can and does cause problems for the victims of ID theft. It happened to me a couple of years ago and I had to go to court before the speeding charge against me was dropped -- and it cost a solicitor and a day off work to achieve it.
