A friend came to work today, after having being stopped for speeding.

He had a ticket for doing 57mph, and was stopped in a 30mph zone.

However, my friend has little idea where they took the speed reading, and failed to ask to see the evidence. They said they used a speed gun, a reading of -57mph.

Main problem is, the zone went from a 50mph to a 30mph, and he said he was following another car at like the 2-3 second gap, so as he entered the 30mph zone he must have slowed down to ~30mph with the preceeding car.
He knows he was indeed exceeding the limit in the 50 zone, but is unsure now, if the police have clocked him in the 30mph zone.
He did not see them until they were flashing their lights behind him, and this was within the 30mph zone.

Do the police record the zone in which they took the reading? Is there video evidence of this, or is it simply their word against yours, how does this evidence hold up in court?

Biggest problem though, is that he is on an international lisence, which the two year period ended about a month ago. He has done the theory, and is waiting for a practical test. So in theory, he has been driving without a lisence for a month or so.

He is however, a good driver with nothing so far except a traffic light camera got him as the lights changed while queuing off the junction while already commited through the light (doh).

What are his chances? He has said he goes straight to a court for any offence, since it's an international lisence, so can't get the usual on the spot fines so common to unwary motorsits these days, which may be a good thing if they are trying to get him for 57mph in a 30mph rather than the 50mph zone...

Hmmmm
