Have I dodged a bullet/been very lucky?
Discussion
So having had a clean license all my life (35 driving years) in the last 9 weeks I've been caught twice speeding on the A3. 60 and 61 in a 50mph zone. 6 points on my license.
Last week on the Wendover by-pass I was caught by a camera van doing 89 in a 60mph zone.
I have a letter from the Thames Valley Police and the address starts "Fixed Penalty Support Unit".
It says that I will receive a conditional offer of a fixed penalty. I assume this will be points, but how many? Is a fixed penalty 3 points? (6 will mean I will be on 12 points!).
I was going to fast for a Speed Awareness Course.
Needless to say this is a wake up call and I have taken a good hard look at myself and I concluded I'm a fu****ng dick.

Without knowing the conditions and circumstances I would suggest that you don't be too hard on yourself unless you're seriously trashing limits in built up areas. Some limits would seem to be too low. Lowering limits is easier than getting people to buck up their driving.Look at that couple of Avon & Somerset police officers on trial for doing a Huhne. She'd previously played the system to avoid an FPN and then she got done something like four times over a month. So she was caught about the same number of times over a similar period. You've taken it on the chin and are self flagellating which is more than she did despite her job and employer.
Penance would be an IAM or RoSPA course? You think you've been an appendage. Read some books, watch a video or two, practice and take a test?
I don't know if you drive or ride like a tool everywhere. Doing an IAM or RoSPA test would be good to do anyway, though that reads a bit precautionary principle.
Here's the lesson for all those who bleat on about not doing an SAC, as it funds some conspiratorial type of quango, or it doesn't affect your insurance much. The OP would now be on 6 points and still have a margin for error in the next 3 years instead of being on a knife edge.
SACs are not about insurance, or who they fund; they're about getting a bonus life on your licence.

^^^^^^^ What he said.SACs are not about insurance, or who they fund; they're about getting a bonus life on your licence.
Always Take the SAC if offered.
It's worth noting if it comes down to it, 12 points is not an automatic ban. It just means you have to have your day in court. Happened to me a few years back in my stupid period. I pleaded my case in court and kept my license, just had to pay £340 in fines and costs. I got rid of my car and bought a crappy Punto 1.1 for 4 years (which was my punishment).

<wince> That's long been camera alley...PS.....I have sent the paperwork off and points are inevitable as too fast for a SAC.
I have however asked for the points and pay for a course; it can't be a bad thing. We will await the reply.

I had to explain exactly this to my dad last year and pursaded him to go on the SAC he was offered, he has just got 3 points and a £100 fine, IF he hadnt have listened to me, they'd have taken him to 12 and he would have been banned. Lucky for him he is on his last life and has 9 in total (all circa 80mph on DC's he isnt some kinda speed freak loon)SACs are not about insurance, or who they fund; they're about getting a bonus life on your licence.

He needs to open his eyes a bit more though, as I drive at 85 a 90 on motorways / NSL DCs and have a clean licence. Spidey sense seems to work well though Mobsy said:

Yep and threw some salt over my shoulder, avoided any ladders and everything else I can think of. Sooner or later I'm going to get caught, but until then it's happy days. When I do, then I'll accept it in good grace, knowing that I'm still well ahead. Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
