Will my number plate pass an MOT if..

.. my legal plate is just duck-taped over the top of my "illegal" one (spacing)? Would save having to unscrew and replace them if I can just stick the legit ones over the top at MOT time. Yes, I am that lazy.
:-)
Or, as a novel idea, why not fit the legal plate correctly and then leave it in place?:-)
If it's on there and looks unlikely to fall off at the first bump, it should pass.
I've had mine go through on double sided sticky pads before.
Everyone else, mind your own business. It's not like he's running "Ben Hur" hubcaps or has a giant spike welded to the bonnet.
If the law catches him, they will deal with him as they see fit.

This thread is gold. Is it *really* worth putting on mis-spaced plates on that you have to go to the lengths of planning some Heath-Robinson way to stick them on?
Maybe you could simply go to the next step and below the duck tape fasten two party poppers underneath the plate, with the firing end on the dodgy plate. Then, tie the strings together, to a long strand of cotton through the engine bay so that it comes out by the steering column.
Then, when the rozzers are pulling you over, you simply pull a lever, which pulls the strings, fires the party poppers, discarding the evidence of the nasty plate?
Think of them scratching their heads in the doughnut shop!

What about just a pair of these each end, then clip/unclip between legal plate and illegal plate in seconds?

Anyway, and rather more to the point, my guess is that we're talking about yet another predictable and ubiquitous "S200 Oxx" or "S2 Kxx" plate...

That, Justin, is a stupid idea. It's unlawful to operate a hand-pull jettison device whilst driving, and once stationary, the plate will just fall off and lie there for all to see.
There is an important principle in English law that you seem to have forgotten. As Lord Chief Justice Bredvanne once reminded me, before his own tragicincarceration incineration, "Destroy all the evidence! Hurry!"
Ergo, you should fit a couple of those little headlight washers next to the numberplate lights, and make the illegal plates out of caesium.

Nay trashbat, you are a step behind. On a right hand drive car, the party popper string on the drivers side of the place will naturally be shorter.
Thus, the pull of the lever will activate this popper a split second before the nearside one - hence firing the plate to one side.
So, as the OP sees the rozzers he simply pulls the lever before or during his reduction in speed to expunge the plate into the verge at a time that the rozzers will not even notice.

I see, the old asymmetric gambit. Will there be any kind of paper trail? On a right hand drive car, the party popper string on the drivers side of the place will naturally be shorter.

They'll assume that no-one is lazy enough to go to all the trouble of affixing a second number plate over another one with tape when it's probably takes less time with an electric screwdriver just to replace it.

Just trying to save myself the 5 mins of replacing the plates is all should it not be required. Saying that, a re-test is free so if it fails on plate hangoffyneess I'll screw the legal ones on.
Just trying to look at this from plod's PoV....So, any other areas of vehicle legislation that you've decided are optional?
