No better place to teach a new driver about the ice/braking/skidding/understeer/oversteer etc.....

Couldn't agree more. I'm 20 but have been doing "autotests" since I was 14, for those who don't know an autotest is an event held in a car park or other large sealed surface area, with marker posts (usually cones) in various places. Competitors are given diagrams of each test (usually 8-12 in a day, with two, maybe three, attempts at each) which may require them to do 90, 180 or 360 degree handbrake turns, J-turns (reverse flicks), reversing or driving through tight spaces etc against the clock. They are organised by local motor clubs, have MSA permits, and obviously landowners permission. More information at www.ukmotorsport.com/uk_autotest.html

It is a fantastic (but more importantly safe) way of learning car control. You're 18 years old, out in your car, maybe 1.30 in the morning, a wet or snowy car park, of course the temptation to be a bit of a "loon" is there. Its human nature. If it can be controlled in some way (but not overly so) then surely that is the best way forward?

Spent about two hours on Tesco's car park yesterday. Had everything going, from 180 degree handbrake turns to perfect four wheel drifts. I've never had so much fun at such low speeds. Awesome

Very sad...

I think you will probably be better with a cruising forum or Maxpower/Fast Car types.....

If pistonheaders think that spending 2 hours on Tesco's car park is acceptable...there is something seriously wrong here...

Very sad

There is nothing seriously wrong here at all.
What better place to learn car control and have a play.

It was how I learned how to drive when I was 17, my dad took me to a large empty deserted snow covered car park and taught me how to cope with skids, oversteer etc, it has saved my bacon a couple of times, and now if I get the chance I will have a play.

Its icy and if no one else is there... whats the problem? Rather people learn there than find out the hard way wrapped around a tree.

Note on this occasion there isnt a crowd of chavs to impress.

Lighten up and take that Pro-Laser out your arse!

Well...that IS my username...

In reality...if there were no members of the public in the car park, I wouldn't be putting pen to paper if I witnessed such tomfoolery. Provided of course, that it was relatively low speed tomfoolery...
For if it all goes wrong and someone is seriously injured or dies...it's me and my colleague who have to pick up the pieces and spend days on end on the investigation...

I can see that - I understand why you might get peed off watching somebody do something stupid, 10 minutes after you scraped somebody else off a wall...

I think you're right - it comes down to the speeds involved and the risks - surely people who are keen enough to practice, at least a bit, are better equipped to avoid spreading themselves over the wall in the first place?

Gary,
I think the thread was about utilising empty car parks for 'skill testing' rather than max power type events.
Yes, I agree with you if there is even just one member of public there other than said tomfooler then yes, they need to be 'stuck on'

Empty car park, one bloke practising car control (as we have done on driving courses) then a little chat I think is the way ahead. After all, not too much harm is being caused is it?

Come on mate, you know you loved the hoonery involved in the skid pan training....

I'm just smarting really...

About 5 weeks ago, I had to deal with a car through a furniture shop window...

Empty car park...nobody about...the driver stated he was doing some 'Window Shopping'....

Would have been funny had it not tied me up for a couple of hours...

He was obviously arsing about on the icy car park and lost it..

Well .. he would say that wouldn't he!

Bet he was really after a nest of tables for his Christmas goodies

Nothing wrong with an empty car park.. Did it myself years ago. Bit difficult these days with Sunday shopping ... but living where I live .... lots of safe desolate places for young William to practise He has been on a skid pan - organised by the BiB relatives Lad still on learning curve here ...and so far .. he has not had me pacing the floor in worry.

If it is empty and no-one will get hurt ... what is the problem? Rather they know how to handle a skid than crash ....

This is what I call sensible policing, if no harm is being done, no one is being hurt, no nuisance & little risk then what is the problem?

I for one would rather youngsters & oldens alike had some knowledge of what happens when it all goes pete tong & more importantly what makes it go wrong in the first place.

I think I'd prefer to watch someone learing car control in car park then finding out what the local scenery is made of.............

like this very very lucky PH'er here
