Between Swindon J16 and Junction 18 (A46) there have been many roadworks recently leaving purple 'pipes' sticking out of the ground (which I suspect are for fibre comms cables).
This morning, I noticed several covered permanent road signs had been installed on the side of the M4 between J17 & J16, one of which was partially uncovered revealing a speed camera symbol.
I also saw contractors working on the hard shoulder with what appeared to be a large speed camera.
Looks like Wilts Safety Camera Partnership are saving up for the 2005 Christmas party.

If this is correct it's bad news... Apart from temporary cameras in roadworks and to enforce variable speed limits (e.g. on the M25), I don't *think* there are any fixed cameras used on Motorways.

Just imagine the revenue to be raised on the M4 from fixed cameras set at 79mph. And also the potential carnage when someone panic-brakes on seeing one for the first time.

So, I'm hoping it's not what it looked like...

No fixed cameras on the motorway?

Come to London much?

There are 5 between J6 and J1 of the eastbound M4 and one eastbound and one westbound on the M4 past Swansea

Forget the fixed cameras in roadworks. A few months ago, Wiltshire scamera partnership got permission from government to set up mobile gatsos (ie van hidden behind bridge/hedge/up a tree etc) between junction 16 and 18 of the M4.

Needless to say Avon and Somerset Scamera partnership feeling a bit left out, were last seen heading off to government with their motorway business plan.....

One of the SouthWales scameraships have been regularly zapping people a mile before the toll booths on the M4 going into Wales on the 2nd severn crossing.

I thought special dispensation was given for the cameras on the M4, as it was a reduced limit, and the only time they're allowed on normal NSL motorways was in roadworks? But, having said that, I didn't know about the Swansea ones - are they in an NSL too?

The Swansea ones are in a perminant 50 limit as there's no hard shoulder around there.

As for the M4 near Swindon, it's been a bit of an accident blackspot for years with one happening almost every month. Of course the scamera pratnerships have decided it's because of speed so have been chomping at the bit to install cameras/talivans there......

....and don't forget the two cameras in the 50mph section at Port Talbot (one Eastbound and one Westbound).

Just saw reference to this on

www.safetycameras-wiltshire-swindon.co.uk/pub.asp

but it does say specifically that it applies during the roadworks and lane closures only.

Yes, these were talivans operating within the roadworks monitoring the 50mph speed limit, now there are permanent signs put up....and no roadworks.
Just keep an eye out, that's all.

But arent those sections reduce speed parts? I thought it wasnt possible to put speed cameras on standard motorways. So much so, they had to pass an amendment to the law to allow for the variable limits on the M25. But the M25 only allows for that particular section. If they want to expand it they have to apply again.

IIRC you cant put a fixed camera on a 70MPH motorway - though I could be completely wrong....

This is my local stretch of blacktop, and a friend has seen the same signs.

I think most of the RTAs that were fatal were late night single car accidents. Ie, the fool fell asleep.

So slowing us all down will help there.

No worries, as long as their static, the Origin B2 will spot them.

Don't know if there are actually any cameras up there, but the M180 has loads of permanent gatso warning signs. Presumably they're scamming from the bridges up there? Stupid really, as that has to be one of the emptiest roads in the country! Can't really see how anyone could manage to crash on it, as there is never any other traffic, unless you've dozed off, in which case a warning sign is really helpful...

Back to the M4, aren't those purple pipe things related to the new propaganda, sorry, information gantries? Similar things on the M1...roadworks to chop out a piece of embankment to put the gantry in, then loads of purple tubing laid out next to the road.

well, there are already a couple that have yet to go live.
One of these is during J18 - just before the 'on-ramp'

of course, this location has everything to do with safety and nothing to do with the fact the off-ramp, hill, bend and bridge obsecure it until the last moment

The M4 has a record of accidents but I have never seen one casued by speeding. The latest was a lorry load of new cars on its side this week. As usual the accident happened early hours, perhaps the driver was sleepy. Most accidents I am aware of are early morning and involve lorries. But why let the facts get in the way of a good revenue seam, it will rake in millions with out a doubt.

As an M4 commuter, I'm with Spaximus - it's almost always lorries or vans. Yes people speed, but it's not them causing accidents!

(T2000 - did you get that?!?!?)

There are 6 Westbound on the M4 in the 60 and 40 limits.

But I don't think they can place Gatsos on NSL motorway, just stealth Talivans
