The reason it's less successful than it should be is that the temporary limits are often ignored in my experience.
Because you constantly come across them and they make zero sense? You can see five miles into the distance, it's clear, and a 40 mph limit is showing etc.I have lost count of the times I have been genuinely concerned that someone is about to crash into the back of another vehicle due to this.70mph to 30 or 40 mph on a clear road, is an accident waiting to happen..Someone on here worked with these systems and I seem to remember them suggesting they can be triggered simply by a few trucks being close together etc and may have nothing to do with volumes of traffic or problems. It was also mentioned that often, they are not sure of the location of an issue, so just 'blanket' the area with limits.
All I know is that a while ago, there must have been an issue with the M25 setup as for the first time in a very long time, not a single gantry was lit.Guess what? It was the best journey I have had on that section since before they were all installed.
And before the 'safety' argument gets rolled out, the only thing now stopping you being punted off the motorway by a truck when you break down, is a red 'X'
Are road users and taxpayers represented as stakeholders?
A long 40mph limit on the northern M25 earlier this week (10 miles?), no obstruction, nothing, zilch. For a change, I wasn't the only trundler at 40ish, but plenty of lorries sweeping past on the limiter.
The verge-mounted signs are a poor design, they can't always be seen if you're in a low vehicle in lane 3 or 4 where the inside lanes are logged with lorries.
