They actually warn that it could be a section 55 DPA offence - and they are wrong.

CMA is closer to reality if they wanted to pursue it - but they'd have a very long line outside the courts by now and their proof of authority requirements are somewhat lax.
Probably true about the DPA - it's hard to see how the insurance status of a random number plate could fall into any sort of personal data criteria. Although it becomes less clear of you know the owner, when it might come under sensitive personal data as "[...] information as to [...] the alleged commission by him of any offence".

It's hard to see how you could take advantage of any of the exceptions to a S.55 offence in that case since you could't claim "preventing crime" or "in the public interest" until after obtaining the information (the point where the offence would be committed) and confirming the lack of insurance.

As to their (agreed, very lax) "security" system, that makes no difference under the Misuse of Computers Act to the question of whether or not you were authorised - you've been told clearly that you're not authorised so you'd be proceeding without authorisation, just the same as if you robbed someone's house "because they left the door open, Mi'lud".

Uninsured vehicles on a public road is illegal, full stop. I will use askMid no matter if I am suposted to do so or not. If you pay for your vehicle insurance and tax, then rightly you can claim the unfairness of some not doing so and like in the past I will report to the local police. Within 24 hours such vehicles are rightly removed from public roads!!!

Indeed. But as it was 5 years ago I guess the OP has it sorted by now, one way or another.

It seems to be Armtere's MO, as the only other threads they've responded to are 3 and 6 years old - maybe they're only given supervised access to a computer every 3 years or so?

Just going to post this little note from askMid, Armtere, breaching the Data Protection act is 'illegal, full stop'.......

"
am entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle detailed above for one or more of the following reasons: It is either registered/ owned/ insured by me or my employer; I am permitted to drive it; I am an Insurance Broker or agent and acting on behalf of my client.

I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes. If I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring this information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 170 of the Data Protection Act 2018".
