Ive just had my first taste of being a victim of crime and i must admit its not a very satisfying feeling.
After waking up on Saturday morning to find that my large Garden Shed at the bottom of the Garden had been broken into and several brand new boxed items of property had been taken.
The shed was securely locked and i though burglar proof as we are using it as storage whilst our house is being extended.

Enqs (by me) showed that several others had been broken into and items stolen and also that the slaggy scroats had driven a vehicle half a mile through fields to park adjacent to our property in order to load 'their newly acquired booty'.

I could not believe the response from the'local' Police that noone would be attending (because they didnt actually break into the house)apart from a Scenes of Crime person and that the details were taken over the phone.

The main point that im annoyed at is the fact that speaking to anon Police person on the phone could lead to valuable evidence being lost at the scene for what was obviously a well planned thieving operation and more than merely kids larking about.

I know that this is now standard practice but its certainly not the way forward.

Ive invested in some heavy machinery so that next time imprepared.

Thanks for the concern chaps but it was a very strange feeling reporting the facts of this over the phone just like you would a lost dog and i know for a fact that ive used my own skills and found more pieces of the jigsaw that would never ever have been found otherwise.

I must point out that this is now procedure and not restricted to my local Force.

Still think that its a large step backwards IMHO.

It's not good at all, I've had very few dealings with the police but you can start to see why people get annoyed when they get caught for speeding when the police don't seem to care about cases like this.

Just as an example

I had my car broken into and radio stolen from a car park and reported it immediately to the police station. They give me a crime number and promise to get back to me within half hour... 2 hours later still no call so I call back and get another promise.

Next day lunchtime I finally get to speak to somebody and report the details and asked if I want the car finger printed even tho I'd had to use it since.

I later find out that my car is at least the third to be broken into this week and (all were reported to the police) and then later discover that others have been "done".

Now, you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to work out after a couple of calls that the thieves are likely to return but did the police do anything about catching these people, did they .

Hardly the crime of the century I know but come show some kindda interest.

Tough luck mate. Had my garage broken into a few years ago, just shrugged it off and had a giggle as they stole the heaviest 21" video monitor (Without speakers) ever and it was broken! Did loose a pressure washer and my big collection of screws hurt the most! But more recently I had my car broken into on my drive, it was parked about a foot from the front door and I was still up! They broke the rear window and didn't take anything but raked through everything. I called the BiB and got a crime number, didn't expect to hear anything more. Two days later a lady rang me and asked if they could come and fingerprint as they were trying to crack down on car crime, I laughed at her and said I repaired it the next day your a bit late!
I have seen a fair few Police cars driving around my estate at night which is good but if anything ever goes off they always turn up in force, like 6 cars for a drunk lady banging up her husband that didn't go home! I'm sure 2 cars would have been overdoing it, perhaps the other 4 cars could have been out patrolling other areas....

It's not a nice feeling is it.

On the subject of how the calls are handled, I phoned recently to report an ongoing vehicle break-in, in day time on a busy road. All the other passers by were acting as if the hadn't seen him. I remember being puzzled by the tone of the civillian operator as I was questioned as to why I thought the guy was breaking into the car. I appreciate they have to screan the calls but they wouldn't commit to send someone out. Totally exasperated, I suggested that I deal with it. (I was holding my 18month toddler at the time and was about to give her to someone else to hold). Finally they agreed to send a car. In fairness two officers arrived quickly and aprehended the guy once I had actually convinced the operator that there was a crime in progress.

It is hard to rationalise it all especially in the context of feeling like a criminal for tripping a speed camera.

But hey ho

Be prepared fopr them to return once they think the insurance company has replaced your goodies as well.

I was told that I could not put an electric charge through my shed locks And if the dogs took a chink out of their backside - we'd be in bother as well.

they said nothing about our snotty cat though ... Or the geese ...

PS - forgot to say sorry and welcome to the club!
