Traffic light, OP overtakes whoever is in lane 1 and then joins lane 1. Fiesta doesn't know what he is doing as is looking to where is the junction he needs to turn right so he is a bit slow which is fine. Audi comes out of nowhere, forces as overtake and running out of road squeezes the Fiesta, instead of braking hard to take gap.
If OP tried to close the door is difficult to say, I don't think he did, more inclined to think Fiesta slowing down. Regardless of that that Audi driver took big chances... Had he hit that island could have been nasty... He disappears in the distance so speeding there, I assume limit is 30 as built up area.
We all make mistakes, in this case the person overtaking needs to ensure it is safe to do so. I think driving a S diesel gives him road entitlement hence the lack of respect for other road users, he didn't adjust his speed to the circumstances.

For what it's worth, I was bored and did a frame-by-frame analysis of the video.
There is a period of acceleration away from the lights, then a let up, then a brief burst of acceleration. The speed is constant at approx 46 mph for 1.5 seconds before the Audi becomes visible, which suggests that the OP let up on the throttle once he saw the audi beginning the overtake manoeuvre.
I'd argue that the acceleration and speed were a bit aggressive for the road, however.

The rate is quite linear up to 4 1/2ish seconds (16:07:42 on the time stamp), it then increases from then on. Look at the effect on the front end of the vehicle. It rises in a sustained manner when the rate of acceleration increases and then drops once more just prior to 16:07:44. It's me giving an opinion on a forum from viewing a YouTube video, it's not a scientific analysis that you'd could obtain in a formal investigation.

Agreed I did bash it like a 'gibbon' whilst the road was clear from the lights and if your 46mph is correct I was speeding. But I didn't try and block the audi and indeed I broke and left him as much room as possible to merge once his nose passed my window which makes his overtake of the fiesta van all the more stupid so basically he was racing me. Also if I am doing 46 in 30 what the hell is he doing 50 plus approaching a merge lane were the road narrows trying to complete an overtake! What went through his mind. As stated he carries on overtaking and as I come off the next roundabout he is about 10 cars ahead and full offside approaching a roundabout on a hill with poor view. Its luck that stopped him from killing someone.
My driving was not the best agreed, but I wasn't driving like a nut case like the audi.

Audi - if the OP had been a Police car, would he have driven in the same manner?

I read the first 30 posts or so before I watched the video and expected to see some crazy lunatic driving from the OP.
The reality is that he does very little wrong. It is impossible to tell if he accelerates because of the Audi, or if he just doesn't notice until late. The audi's driving is awful/
To state anything else is based on guesswork, and to critise and shout abuse at the OP on a forum is just pathetic.

The reality is that he does very little wrong. It is impossible to tell if he accelerates because of the Audi, or if he just doesn't notice until late. The audi's driving is awful/

To my eyes the OP looked like he 'closed the gap' but was that because they failed to read the road properly and so drove as if there was no one overtaking them or because they did not wish to be overtaken and thought that they would settle the issue by removing any room for the Audi guy to slot in? I do not know the answer but would say that they had failed to read the road properly. Not in itself a crime or "that bad" but it did mean that a difficult situation became more dangerous as a result.
The Audi driver. Nothing to say about them up to the point where it was clear that (because of the extent to which the gap between the OP and the slower car had reduced) they should have backed off, metally put the OP on 'tosser' list (because like it or not that is how the OP's actions will look to Mr Audi), and slotted in behind.
That the Audi drive chose to continue with their overtake of OP was unwise, but perhaps was a valid option (they could have slotted into the vastly reduced gap). That they then chose to overtake the slower car when and where they did was fkwittery of the highest order. They were oh so close to hitting the centre kerb and that would have been the start of a quite damaging accident.

How would the law define "necessary". I see this type of driving often when a section of dual carraige way merges in to a single lane with a large "run off" section of diagonal white stripes, in same cases continuing for several hundred meters. The vast majority of cars entirely ignore these areas and treat the run off section as a continuation of the dual carriage way - thoughts?Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. By coincidence, the areas I am talking about are actually very near the place the OP took the video - the standard of driving, especially when foggy/wet can be comical in this neck of the woods.
