Another question about VSL to which I've never gotten a satisfactory answer: if the purpose is to aid traffic flow on the motorway then why do they have VSL signs, complete with cameras and markings, on the exit slip roads?
That is to show that drivers exiting the motorway are no longer under the direction of the variable speed limit.

There, that wasn't difficult was it?

82 is over 3mph+10%?
So what?

The only reason the 70mph limit wasn't scrapped long ago is that nobody in government has had the political will to do so.
Well if it is so popular where is the difficulty with the political will?

Maybe the politicians who proposed the move to 80mph NSL on the motorways were advised better that you have been.

Time to change your user name again. I think everyone now recognises you as a troll again.

I was actually coming in here specifically because I have just had a NIP through for 82 mph in that exact section at 4:15am! (on the way to Bristol Airport) Did not expect them to be on since the variable speed limit was off

How can anybody claim it has anything to do with Safety!

You know perectly well they were scared off by the likes of BRAKE.

What drives you to keep coming back here, where everybody knows who you are, and making an idiot of yourself?

He's not a troll, he just has an unfortunate manner. A particular unpleasantness was an issue around using the incorrect paperwork for the job in hand wink ; how to choose between using XXX Constabulary or XXX Safety Camera Partnership headed paper, for those "difficult" letters to the public when leading the XXX Safety Camera Partnership... scratchchin

The Peter Principle kicked in soon after hehe - a role in RSS, anyone?

I think the reality will be as more and more of our Motorway network becomes 'managed/smart' motorway, then you'd have to be an idiot to not expect them (now they have the tech and means to do it) to enforce the speed limit. Yes even the 70 mph one.

I don't like it, and i'm pretty sure no one else here on PH will either, that won't stop it from happening though.

I fully expect in the not too distant future to see lots of 'OMG I got done doing 75 on the motorway!' threads.
Our free range days are over, at least we had fun before that happened unlike our kids, who probably won't even be able to drive if the car self driving thing comes to fruition.
You're probably right, but what a horrible, depressing thought.

I'd not be surprised if people started obscuring/removing their plates. Or bothered.

Not sure why I would make that up, not the best picture to avoid taking picture of Home Address but here you go

4:14 westbound 82mph what a ridiculous waste of money.

"End the war on motorists" "No cameras on motorways because they're the safest roads" No wonder politicians are the most distrusted group of people in the country. Basically just lie through their teeth whenever it suits.

Well, it does take a special kind of arrogance to do what he does

I went through the M5 Southbound at Almonsbury stretch about a month back early in the morning and saw a double flash from the opposite carriageway, but it was not from the overhead gantry cameras but from a camera situated on the support tower to the left of the motorway.

None of the overhead cameras flashed....whereas this one did....

The northbound one just before the interchange (on the gantry which is often 40 for no reason) is very busy most days. During winter when the flashing is more visible it's quite impressive hw much flashing it does.

I've seen what was identified on here to me as a "hadecs system" activating regularly on the M1 whilst the standard NSL is in force.
