Another case of minor bumper damage, going through insurance for a £300 panel. GG.

No, why would it?

It's a old wives tale that it does.

If the Touareg needs a new bumper it won't be £300.

There's a 2015 Rear R-Line valance (the large insert at the bottom of the bumper) on Ebay for £100.

I would imagine the basic bumper skin to be about £250/300. Usually bumpers are not that expensive. It's the grills, trims etc that cost the big dollar.

Either way bumper respray is not worth effecting your NCB or premiums for the next 5 years!
If you have protected NCB then I guess it's not too bad, but again why use 1 of your 2 strikes for minor damage....

Everyone on here says that, but my missus had exactly the same thing happen to her car. The other driver (a woman who was on her phone) knew someone who could sort it cheap.

We just let our insurance take care of it and it didn't make any difference to the premium. They even waived the excess despite taking the car to a dealer rather than their approved repairer.

The other driver is probably on PH writing a post about the ahole who is trying to make a false claim for damage that wasn't done in the accident...

I shouldnt laugh...... Why are second hand panels being discussed ffs? Its a few years old and should be returned to the original condition. Who is stumping up the labour cost? cant just write that off, in most cases its the labour that makes the majority of the bill.

Besides, I pay insurance so its there if I need it, not to dip into my own pocket to repair damage someone else did.

I guess it's different that I look for cheaper solutions.
It's a panel and paint. If you get a genuine panel and a decent painter there's no issues, so it will be "as before".

I'm glad in some cases as posted above NCB or renewal is not effected but I couldn't imagine anything worse than "Any accidents in the last 5 years?"

And having to answer yes because I needed a new bumper or a bit of paint.
Considering what most peoples excesses are (between £150 and £500 in most cases) it really does beggars belief.
If someone smashed into my rear 3/4 panel and fked it then I'd be bloody going through insurance but if someone caught my bumper in a car park and were happy to give me £200 or whatever, I would take it to save both our own insurances.

Is this based on actual experience though?

At one point when I was insuring both mine and my wife's cars I had to declare and accident for both drivers on each car (we're named on each others policies)as we both had an own fault accident. It may well have resulted in increased premiums but it was hardly a problem. Insurance for both cars together is currently less than £500 on a multicar policy.

Yes.

A while ago, within 6 months of passing my test I went into the back of a Honda Civic in my Corsa.
I was doing maybe 10 or 15 at tops. The corsa had a horrific bodykit so no weight or substance behind the impact.

The guy said he would do cash but I didn't have any unfortunately so went through insurance
He literally needed a rear bumper respray. As a 19 year old it then cost me £3500 to insure a Golf 1.9 TDI as a replacement car, when it would have cost me £1900 without that 1 claim on my record.

I would use insurance for more than about £1250-1500 of damage otherwise I'd rather just deal with it in cash. The claim has to be worthwhile to effect my NCB. I have 7 years NCB now and even though that would stay in the event of being crash into as we all know even being involved in an accident puts up your premiums.

LSS. Got hit, guy asked to pay cash. I said yes, he wouldnt pay the £300 I saif it would cost. Argued a bit, I put it through my insurers. Excess is £750 so went via 3rd party claim. Cost of damage was over £700.

Doesnt pay to take cash unless (like me) I can repair it myself, but even then you have to factor your time in etc.

If you drive a stter of a daily and can make a few £££'s then thats another story, but generally you will under estimate the damage and the car wont be as before.

Have you stuck the number into google? A lot of folk stick numbers on gumtree adverts and so on.

Failing that, let the PH detectives on here find it. wink

Young drivers? People who haven't been driven for very long? People who have very expensive cars?

Most insurance companies put young drivers excess up until 3 years drive or 21-24 (depends)

HA !!! Think again !

We had a girl run into the back of the wifes BMW, we were happy to settle for cash in hand thinking couple of hundred tops. Got three quotes all of which were over £1500. The bare bumper skin without , sensors, clips or brackets was £900 un painted. That's on a 2004 5 series so nothing fancy at all.

Not really ha. Rear bumper for a Scirocco is 200 quid. Golf is about 140 quid.

Depends on the car. Obviously there are exceptions. Not forgetting you can buy used parts off Ebay which are perfectly good ... but peoples time (that they spend browsing PH) is far too valuable! :-)

new M-sport genuine bumper 450.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-BMW-E60-5-Series...

Whole bumper with diffuser and PDC loom under £200.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E60-5-SERIES-M-SPORT...

Which would be as new after a respray..... my point is 2 minutes of my time and I've 1/4'd your price quoted for a bumper alone.
Painting £250 at public cost and fitting a bumper is something you and a mate can do on a Saturday morning. Time = 2 hours.

Assuming I'm paid hourly at my annual salary and it takes 3 hours (if you are cocking about). that's £50

So for say £600 tops that's a new BMW 5 Series M sport bumper painted and fitted.

Probably not the best example but you get my point .
