What am I missing here? Day release for murderers?

I thought 20 years meant 20 years.
How do they possibly deserve day release only months into a sentence for murdering a small child?
If it was down to me they might just be on their first 10 minute break from smashing boulders into dust

as long as the kids relatives know when they are out, I cant see a problem?
In my eyes, if you are convicted of killing somebody you should be in prison for the rest of your life. Not let out on day release. Not to be allowed to act like a normal human being who hasn't taken someones life.

So simplistic. And fails the moment you start asking further questions like "did they intend to kill". If you make a mistake, a lapse of concentration perhaps, and you crash into another car and kill the occupant, in your eyes, you'd be sent to prison for life. Justice? Not to be allowed to act like a normal human being who hasn't taken someones life.
Thankfully, the law doesn't look at things with such a broad brush. We have the distinction between manslaughter and murder for a reason. Even in cases of murder there may be mitigating circumstances.
For me, justice is too often conflated with revenge in many peoples eyes. Does nobody else see the irony when after reading a news report about some horrific crime, the comments section fills up with highly imaginative suggestions for punishment that are more often more sadistic, horrific and disgusting than the actual crime committed.
There is no easy answer for justice; but if one is to have hope for the human race; one must have hope that even the worst of us can do better, can make up for their wrongs.
Without mentioning names or location obviously.
A woman convicted over battering her husband to death with a cricket bat and then dumping his body in a ditch was recently spotted using a leisure centre on day release without any prison officer present and using a rental car.
We worked out she was convicted 5 years ago for murder.

That must have happened just a couple of miles down the road from where I am. As stated above, it wasn't day release. I can see why it's controversial and possibly against the rules but it's not something I'd be up in arms about.
From that bastion of quality reporting, the Daily Record:"Last night, a prison service source confirmed the women visited the town but insisted it wasn’t unusual for cons to be allowed out under supervision to attend meetings where personal appearances by those involved are mandatory."
Reading between the lines, I'd guess it's to do with other kids - either they still have contact, or it was an official meeting as part of having other kids officially taken away. It's not a regular jolly day out.

I'm not sure the dead kid deserves this kind of justice.rgf100 said:
