It's toxic to humans in sufficient quantities although not at the levels found in cigarettes.
Nicotine is classed as a stimulant. I'm sure there are many chemical compounds that would be toxic in 'sufficient quantities'. Not being rude but so what?RichB said:

There's smoking and there's smoking, one a week is rather different to 20 a day- open all the windows and it pretty much disperses entirely. Stub it out and keep it in the ashtray and the car will smell like an ashtray.
Not really, empty your ashtray each time you fill with fuel and your car will smell little more that it already does from the roll-ups you smoke in it. That said, I accept that roll-ups are just paper and leaf so not comparable to dog ends. However I do object to people tossing fag ends out of car windows. A few of my cars are open top and numerous times I've been following someone with roof down and had a fag clip the car. Fortunately none have come in but it could happen. It's just damn inconsiderate.

And throwing a lit cigarette end out of a moving car is dangerous, apart from hitting bikers/convertibles etc. there is also the risk of starting a roadside fire.
I'm not anti-smoking but keep your fag-ends with you until you can dispose of them properly.

Well said. I get so irate that people think littering with these things is acceptable. Unfortunately it seems to be the mentality of smokers, which shouldn't really be a surprise given they smoke in the first place, it's a moronic habitAnd throwing a lit cigarette end out of a moving car is dangerous, apart from hitting bikers/convertibles etc. there is also the risk of starting a roadside fire.

I drove from Glasgow to Cambridgeshire yesterday. M77,M74,M6, A66,A1. 400 miles. I should think I saw at least 10 people throw dog-ends from their vehicle. So the problem must be massive.
We live next to the A10 where it follows the Ouse. The verge outside the house is on a 400 yard-ish straight section of road between two corners. Nice location to fling all your litter out apparently, there is no McDonalds anywhere near here but that doesn't stop their litter turning up.
I've never been able to get my head around littering, the ignorance is mystifying. Probably the same sort of pillocks that never shut gates when they leave, having opened them when they entered.

Its not ignorance. Most of them know EXACTLY what they are doing, they just don't care. What i'd like to see is a new generation of ANPR camera that can pick up littering installed in EVERY fast food restaurant car park and the footage used to fine EVERY litter bug. The amount of litter on local fast food car parks is disgusting and thats despite regular litter picking by staff.
If you fined the selfish pricks £100 a time and backed it up with the legal clout to enforce payment then you could make a big difference. Put the money towards some useful environmental projects or similar.

Although I believe littering and most other needless anti-social behaviour to be committed by the more braindead elements of society, as far as dog-ends from cars goes this is not as cut-and-dry. I see as many dog-ends flung out of newish BMWs and Audis as I do ropey old Fiestas or Astras, which leads me to believe that smokers in general may be pig-ignorant idiots regardless of intelligence. Or we could take another tack and suggest that they suffer an addiction much the same as heroin users and perhaps try to excuse their behaviour as a symptom of their lack of willpower and subsequent subservience to their poison. I don't pick on smokers because I am fully cogniscent of the fact that if they decided to ban all stimulants I would be a very grumpy Donkmeister whilst I came off the caffeine.
However, I have never seen someone walk down the street and smash an empty Starbucks cup into the pavement nor have I seen anybody throw one from a moving car. I'm certain there are many who litter with their non-biodegradable coffee cups, however I've not seen it. I've seen loads of people chuck dog-ends out of car windows and throw them onto the pavement. Today I saw someone drop one into a grating... great, it's out of the road but that inspection pit is full of leaves and there will be a source of methane just beyond those combustible leaves. Brilliant idea.
Fines can work but aren't necessary - the campus where I work introduced finger-wagging measures for smoking anywhere except smoking shelters and we never get fag butts anywhere now (we used to get plenty back in the days when you could smoke 20 a day and people thought that made you antisocial rather than retarded). Before the powerfully-built directors start the bad-ass talk I should point out this is a campus full of proper professionals who think for themselves, not zero hours slaves fearing that powerfully-built directors will hammer frozen sausages into their P40s.
So we just need to get rid of people who can't understand "Throwing your fag ends on the street is not nice". But then we wouldn't have the problem anyway. What a pickle.

Not acceptable at all. It's one of those disgusting things that unfortunately will always happen.
My argument of "why not use the perfectly good ash tray in your car?" has always been met with "because it stinks the car out!" erm, so does your filthy habit. Why should the environment suffer because of that?

full of chemicals I hope there is a day when fags are banned and confined to smokers own homes. It just seems prehistoric considering ecigs etc now available as an alternative, the mess and crap that comes with smoking cancer sticks.
wildlife are also effected by the left over fags, nicotine is a poison.

Being addicted to a drug is not an excuse for littering. Just because you have now had your "fix" be it heroin or nicotine, doesnt mean you need to throw litter on the floor, be it fag ends or used needles.I could understand if it was the plastic wrapper they were ripping off the ciggy packet in addiction crazed haze that subsequently fell to the floor, but the butt there is no excuse.
