My cerb is an R plate (or at least it has an R plate, its a 98) if I get a 5 or 6 letter custom plate, can I not choose one which has a letter which is newer than R? How does it work, exactly?

You are not allowed to display a number plate which makes a car appear newer than it is.

I heard that. Surely a custom 6 letter plate isnt standard, therefore it doesnt apply.

The guy who owns "V8" must be able to put it on his car, whatever year it is?

V8 will be year related. Probably about 1906, so he should be OK.

I hear what you say, but if I saw a car plated "V8 GIT" I wouldnt think it was a V reg, I would just think he was a git With a private plate

Is the number of letters/numbers (not the default LLNNLLL) taken into account, meaning a 5/6 digit plate still counts, as "making a car appear newer than it is"?

What if your car is old, can you display any plate, since its a whole cycle of letters behind?

a number like TVR 123 is not year-related so can be put on anything

a number like V8, ditto

a number like V8 TVR is year-related and can only be put on V-reg cars or newer

In other words, the number plate cannot make the car appear newer than it is, which is what I said!

When I buy a new car this year, I do not want an old plate on it, just do not see the point

A personal plate or altered plate with screws and tape is just too easily recognised and stands out a mile away.

My car has no stickers and completely standard Audi A4, as I do not want to be remembered by anyone.

Right, getting there What defines whether a car is year-related?

ie. the difference between TVR 123 and V8 TVR

Adherence to a current or previous pattern of registration numbers and letters:
X111XXX, or XXX111X (with numerical reductions) are year related
XXX1111 are Irish, plates with less then three letters for a prefix I think are gernerally non year related.

any plate issued from,1963 to 1983 is year-related - ie from AAA111A to YYY 999Y

Then from 1983 to whenever the syetem changed again (2000 I think) ie A111 AAA to Y999 YYY

Then the new ones - AA 01 AAA onwards

ie these are number plates from which you can (usually) tell the year in which the car was first registered. You can buy a personal reg and put it on a car that is older than the plate (ie you could put V8 TVR on anything V-reg or newer). You could put VBG 1T onto anything newer that the original T-reg (1978 or something) but not vice versa - you cannot make a car look newer (via the registration) than it really is.

Pre-1963 numbers (123 ABC or ABC 123 with no prefix or suffix year letter) are not age-related and can go on a vehicle of any age.

Gottit?

Is that a bit like invisible, but more risky?

What is a dateless registration?

Dateless registrations do not contain a year identifier and can consist of a number combination followed by a letter combination and vice versa.
