We all know they are not allowed but what do I do about the sensors stuck on the front bumper? If I unplug the control panel is that sufficient not to get in deep shit or do I actually have to remove the sensors on the front?

Dont have the control panel in the car, leave it at home.

Well there is always the danger that they recognise the sensors and then dismantle your car to find the detector itself. (they would too.)

Do they stop people randomly over there or just when speeding?

This is real pain in the arse cos the whole thing has been hardwired into the car and is not exactly easy to remove.

A random stop would be very rare.
Maybe just one in the last ten years, as a documentation check.

They will pull you randommly (ooer)... I got a tug passing through a scenic village on the way to Le Mans last year. Fortunately I'd had 2km of warnig flashes from teh French motorists heading in the other direction so my speed was completely safe as I approached the village.

They had a good look round the car and inside the cabin looking for a detector.

Unfortunately a mate taking a different route got pulled and was held up by Msr Dick Le Turpin for 3 hours and lightened by 500 euros plus his detector!

Looks like I need to spend as little time as possible in France then on the way to Monza.

It's a question of luck. I was over there last summer adn forgot my laser jammer was switched. This was fortunate, because it jammed a Gendarmerie laser gun, allowed me to slow down and pass them without incident. It happened once more that week and those were the only occasions on which it ever went off. I don't have one on the new car.

Drove from St Malo to St Sebastien in Spain last weekend. Seen the French gatsos for the first time - 4 in 900km. Floor standing but each had a clear warning sign about 1-2km ahead. And there were no dummy signs like here. No Talivans. If thats how they do it I can live with that.

what is the law now, it all seems confusing - one minute i understand that the police have to make the cameras visible and painted bright - then next minute all one sees are green ones, hidden behind trees, etc.

also, why do they bother with the speed camera warning signs if there are in fact no cameras - also, are the posting of these warning signs required in areas where scamera vans operate?

all bloody confusing and i fail to see how a "law" can be legislated if it is inherently so variable in it's enforcement and guidelines. surely a bright legal counsel could argue this and scupper the whole farce for once and for all?

the posting of warning signs when often there are no cameras is surely a deliberate action of mis-information ... how can that be legal?

weird. i'm sticking to me country lanes ...

i've not driven in france for a few years - their system sounds fair enough, if we have to have these damn things at all let's follow their model. funny how there is zero european harmonisation when it suits, isn't it?!

Hey hang on, they're not all nice, sign-posted fixed installations. They also hide mobile units under bridges on motorways and nationales, laser speed guns anywhere that they judge you're easy meat, radar/camera installations in darkish estate cars that take photo's of you as you overtake them. The only advantage compared to the UK is the vast area they have to cover and the (as yet) limited number of radar set-ups. It can only get worse...
