Garage invoice doesn't match payment taken
Discussion
o.k i haven't contacted the garage yet, but i arranged for my mum to have a starter motor replaced for 210 quid.
the job gets done but when my mum paid it was 244. i have just checked the invoice and it is for 210 pounds, this was given to her, but the card has been charged 244 for which there is a copy.
Anyone come across this before seems very unhand considering my mum is an oap.

As said, ask garage may be a simple mistake.
I had a job I billed and customer paid and I had put VAT on parts and then VAT on the bill.
Just a brain fart and I issued a credit note, job done. They hadn't even noticed.
Just saying mistakes happen, quite possibly a surcharge on starter motor accidentally put on bill?

£210 plus VAT of £42 is £242. Gets a bit closer to the figure but it still isn't £244.
Best ask the garage as they're going to be the only ones able to tell you.
To private customers, VAT should always be included. Any garage that tries to stiff someone for work done, then add VAT onto it (IF they're a private customer) should have a little visit from Trading Standards.Best ask the garage as they're going to be the only ones able to tell you.

I had to have words with a local tyre place who did that. Quoted ex vat on the phone, which I didn't discover until I came to pay!Cyberprog said:

I have a "my dad is hard" story from a few years ago.I had just passed my test and got an absolute lemon of a first car. After a monumental amount of DIY, it had to go a garage for a brake servo leak. Dad said he'd pay it as my Christmas present.
Both dad and I went down. £300 all in for that and some other work. Fair enough. Work gets done, dad and I go back to said garage. "Right so that's £300 plus VAT."
My dad is immediately on the back-foot; "No, VAT should be included in all prices to private customers." Garage owner responds with a series of "No mate, listen, I've been in this business for 20 years. I think I know what I'm doing." My dad protests again, slightly more firm this time. Garage owner then immediately gets agitated and raises his voice "You're not getting the keys until this full invoice is paid, I think I know more about the legalities than you mate."
My dad pulls out his council I.D. which reads "*name* - Trading Standards Manager" and as smug as I've ever seen another human being, says "Want to try that again?"
Final price was £300.
Give the garage a chance to explain,if you have an official invoice for one figure and a visa slip for another it was probably "finger problems".
It's easily done on those little terminals. It happened to me,I pressed the one button twice so my customer paid £1000 to much!!! he thanked me and left!!
That evening I could not understand why I had so much money. When it twigged I had to call him and get him to return and do a credit with his card.Luckily for me he was a regular and thought it was very amusing.
