Not 25% its gone from £15,990 and a haggle to £25k - more than the decent no work required ones that have sold before. Its a certain "type" of person I guess who has no clue what they are driving or its value until told. He should be happy in a Datsun Bluebird!
Did you think the car was under priced when you offered to buy it?

I offered to buy it at the selling price for a 100k miles car, it needs at least £2k of work and is a private sale - I would say it was the right price at £25k still needing the work its way over.

I like to think I have good morals ..... but if I agreed £15k for a private sale (and had taken a deposit) then received another dealer offer of £20k I would find it VERY hard to not back out of the originally agreed sale.

£5k is £5k after all and I would suggest most people on this forum would do the same.

In your OP it said price had gone from £15,500 to £20,500. Was that a typo and he wants £25k? That's a heck of a price difference.

If you haven't already, walk away. There will be more cars, and anyway I reckon the seller will be ringing you in a week or two offering to sell it at something close to what you were willing to pay in the first place.

Of course Ive walked away, its history to me now and I was in two minds for a 100k smoker anyway. He priced it realistically at £15,900 as it would be £19k in perfect condition against a perfect 40k mile one just sold for £23k

I'm just quoting what you said in your original post ... he has an offer.

Either way ... I personally couldn't stomach turning down a potential extra £5k and honestly hand on heart could you if you were in the same situation?

Sorry he has an offer at asking price £15,900 and that trader told him it was worth more - I was offered it at £20k.
With regard to the selling price dilemma I would have priced the car to market - I would have had the work done and sold it at £19,900 ono

Technically a verbal 'contract' was made yes

But if you're thinking it could be enforced legally on a private sale then it's not a practical suggestion.

Was having a discussion recently about this. We came to the conclusion that the whole ' a deals a deal once you shake on it and 'gentleman's agreement' went out years ago.

Some people are just s and no amount of agreeing will changed them.
Not always. I sold some speakers on ebay - 99p no reserve. I needed them out of the way since I'm moving house.

They sold, relatively cheaply. A rather 'mature' well dressed man shows up to collect and apologises that I didn't get what they were worth, mentions I should have used a reserve.

When handing over the cash he offers me 40% more. I refuse since we had agreed a deal at the lower price.

He goes away happy and with my respect for being a genuine person who did what he considered the fair thing, with no obligation to.

Offer £15K as it's older now. smile

I'd be a bit worried about a convertible that can't sell as we come towards summer though.
