Well after a month of driving in Africa without seeing a single effing camera I take a jolly jaunt down the A303 today.....

Cruising past the Yeovilton camera at an indicated 50mph in a 50 limit the blinkin thing only goes off at me.

Now I think it was confused as I had a car trailer in tow so we'll have to wait & see, we'll they'll have to supply some evidence first & Identify the driver through mirrored glass

The UK welcomes me back with a bang

I think its time to leave the country again

I would hazard a guess captain, that it thought you were a truck (big emf from car and trailer), and tripped at the 40Mph limit. This is the cam at camel cross? if so, it can differentiate between heavies and cars.

I wouldn't be too worried

Technically if you were towing then shouldn't you have been doing 40 and not 50 anyway?

On the other hand the camera on the road into Fernhurst is going off at 38mph in a 40 zone, thankfully it was the car in front of me that tripped it and I had a chance to glance at my GPS system to confirm the error.

Phil, do you (or anyone else) know how it does this?

When a ferrous metal object passes a coil, or induction loop (same thing), it creates EMF (electro magnetic flux).
Quite simply, the larger the "generator/ferrous object", the higher the flux created. This can be measured by a galvanometer (voltmeter to you and me).
If it measures higher than a certain preset, the gatso will presume large object IE large vehicle, and trip itself at the lower speed limit (40Mph for trucks on single carriageway).

I stand to be corrected on my terminology, but then I've just finished a long nightshift.

Hope this helps.

The same thing has happened to me a number of times with the camera on the A406 Barking flyover going towards Beckton. I've even tested it a few times by going through at bang on 50 and the camera's still gone off. Never had a ticket though. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Cheers Phil.

I assume the ‘metal detector’ is used in conjunction with the other usual sensors as opposed being the main speed sensor (due to lack of accuracy)?

sounds like could be one of those delightful gatsos that are set to randomly flash, just to make drivers even more paranoid - there's a couple i pass en route to/from manchester airport.

i am always departing/arriving at odd times and usually the only car on that part of the road at the time - i am bumbling along well under the limit (as i am tired and all too aware of the cameras) and often the bloody things flash anyway - have seen them do it when a long way away approaching them, and nothing else is on the road!

really bright, eh? "hey, let's set the gatso to flash at random and really startle and panic drivers!"

sums up what a disgrace these devices are.

Nah, the people that run the cameras are all caring, uncomplicated and safety minded souls.

Camera must be faulty. I would report it as a faulty unit. Would be worth letting the public know that there are faulty units out there as well so that they double check any NIPS sent to them.

Perhaps the local papers could assist. Somewhere close to the list of cameras and mobile sites they could also indicate which are thought to be faulty in some way. That way the public would know which NIPS to check most thoroughly. Good public service is to be commended after all.

As far as I'm aware, the induction loops buried in the road only guage the size of the vehicle passing through the radar beam.

I'll find out for you.

Much appreciated

(I tried to find out more via Google, in vain)
