Further update. Blocks arrived this morning/sand. Bloke said he cant drop off till he is paid, i phoned drive chap up and said i thought ud already paid for them, he said no the money you gave me was for digger hire etc. He has asked me to pay the £1458.00 and he will give it me tomorrow as he was driving to Manchester and couldnt do it. Anway I told him no, so driver got sent away. He said he will sort it tomorrow. I dont hold much hope.
So the other week when he said he had paid for them was a lie.
Ive spoken to a friend of a friend who does landscaping and he said if need be he would help me finish it off.

Some bloke walking his dog asked me who was doing my drive and could i recommend them!

I think it's gone belly up now. He lies then forgets what he has said. He said to me the other week I've bought your blocks and can show you the invoice. So talking utter bks. I text him earlier asking are the blocks coming today as you said you sort it yesterday. Now I get this text..

No I have to much money outstanding on other jobs to pay for them at the minute just remember I'm only a one man band and I charge a lot less than any other block paving company Like I said yesterday yes you paid £1200 take off £450 sat morning for grab and stone £300 hire charge for digger and then two lads money which I have to pay on a daily basic there's about £150 left in your job I will probably make about £300 after drop kerb which isn't a lot at all but that's the price I gave you and I go by my word your mate can tell you I'm not in to ripping people off and I stick to my word I get the job done now I asked u to pay for that yesterday and you said you didn't have that much in your account which then makes me think hold on I can finish your drive and kerb in two days what if you haven't got it when I've finished I've had to pay a £50 pound penalty at builders yard for that which I'm a bit pissed off about because now I have to pay cash before I can have a delivery so you can ether transfer me the money and I can get blocks there for Friday morning to be all finished Saturday afternoon or wait until I've collected cash in of other jobs because you ask Simon if I asked for money it was there and he trusted me with a lot more than what yours is worth its your call mate

job was £2900
The grab was 1 lorry, which was nearly full. The stone was on a 2nd lorry.

The Surveyor said:
Strange, why would he order blocks for the drive if he's no intention of laying them?

OP, when you spoke to him about the blocks arriving and needing payment, did he say anything about when he's going to lay them?

He sounds more disorganised than dishonest.
He ordered them but hadnt paid and as he was out the area was hoping full well that I had paid as he hasnt got an account at the builders merchants.

I havent replied to him as yet. Ive got a local company, rated highly on checkatrade if that makes much difference, coming over this afternoon to give me a quote to finish it off and also check the sub base and his thoughts on it etc.

I then propose to write to the idiot and propose a refund of some sort & if required take him to the small claims court.
Any advice or pointers on this would be greatly received. Thanks to everyone who has replied in the past.

Had a chap came over that is highly rated on checkatrade. He turned up in a clean new van and was professional with uniform on etc. Night and day to that idiot that came over before. He said it would take around 4 days to do and he would need to dig out what is there now. He said the hardcore was far too high and the blocks would be too high and near enough touching the DPC. The drive is approx 75sm. Then down the side of the house as well which is 9sqm so about 85sqm in total with 60mm eaton setts. £4000.

bare in mind ive already had it dug up and hardcore down (to a certain degree) so the price per sqm should be lower. He said if id had it done from scratch then it would be £5k.

Would you bother with a money claim online at him? Il write a letter first and follow procedure etc but I can imagine his answer already.

The address he gave me he lives at, though he is not on the electoral roll there, it looks like his girlfriends house.

Great letter alfie!!

He has just called me! I had a rant and said

You never turn up or let me know, countless excuses as to why you cant come, poor quality of work, sending the blocks to my house without even lettign me know they are on the way, let alone they are not even paid for! He said he had money issues and didnt know why i was annoyed as i had to have the blocks anyway. I said i gave you the money for the blocks 3 weeks ago and you said ud bought them and had an invoice - phone went quiet. He said maybe he could of communicated better with me. He said he had been fined £50 by the merchants for a wasted deliver, i said no you havent as ive just spoken to them and the manager said you havent been in contact at all let alone any talk of a fine. He said they dont "fine" people.

He said check my fb page out loads of good reviews on there, i said they are all your friends. Line went quiet again.

He said have a think about it.

10 mins went and i got this text

Just forget it we have no trust get someone else to finish your drive we have no trust so get someone else in.

so to sum up, the bloke is a tosser, total liar/shyster and crap at his job.

When he phoned the other day and I had a chunter on at him about why he hadn't started on the first day etc I said why didn't you start when you said you would? Expecting him to say my dad died etc. Not once did he mention it. So I think he most likely forgot he had said it in the first place. Bit like the other lies.
