I think I would probably telephone a different main dealer and get a quote, as they will price it from the manufacturer's guidelines.
If that is what you end up paying the dealer that actually did the work I would likely pay it irrespective of the 'over the phone quote with the lady that left'. If the current dealer wants more then I would refer them to the second quote and tell them to behave themselves.

I can't believe 2CV is a genuine person and not a pedantic bot just trying to wind folk up.
He's just a typical internet expert-on-everything via two seconds googling on every topic.
He's a sad individual with too much time on his hands. Hence the ridiculous number of mainly pointless posts during a fairly short time on PH.

It's a big, heavy, expensive car with a reputation.

It's gone in for repair and you were given options and told the body really should come off. They tried to save you some money by not taking the body off. It failed. The body has to come off.

Let them get on with it, pay them, get your car back.
He chose the quote which entailed removing the gearbox, they didn't bother.
Now they need to remove the gearbox after trying to take a short cut and they want more money.
More money over and above the quote they gave which included the removal of the gearbox...

Are you mentally sub-normal or just on the wind up...?
Tough. Pay up.
Why? He was quoted a price which included removal of the gearbox, the dealer tried a route which would have saved time, but there is no evidence that would have reduced the bill, therefore it was done to increase their profit. On most occasions they would benefit from that action, on this occasion they didnt. The OP should not be charged extra for removing gearbox. If the body has to come off then potentially he should be charged more.

Well thats my view but then I dont work in a garage and am not a lawyer.

If anyone is interested in the outcome...

They are returning the car back to how it was and aren't going to charge me for anything.

So the ' seized bolt ' was a total scam then? Who'd have thought it?

See the last line of my reply on page 2...
When you work in a garage, albeit i fix trucks, you tend to understand the waffle and what it actually means.

No, They are putting it back together without fixing it.

They didn't want to carry on the repair just incase they came into any other issues.

Good result after they tried to pull a fast one on you. There are some nutjobs on PH based on some of the replies on this thread!

Good result.

Is LR/RR really only charge 69 quid an hour tho? That surprised me...

Given that they're willing to return the car to you without charge, it sounds like the line about the seized bolt is true and they can't be arsed going any further due to the risk of other seized bolts etc. My friend has a 2005 RRS and just changing the shelf protecting the fuel tank resulted in us having to deal with a few rusted and seized bolts.

It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the next garage and what they say.

They don't charge £69/hour. I'm assuming you got that from when I said what they wanted it labour charges to release the car??

£115/hour plus VAT.

Yes, I believe them about the seized bolt so yeh they just didn't want the hassle which is fine by me. Just wish they hadn't taken a week to say it.

The garage who will be doing the repair are 100% removing the gearbox to do the repair as i've told them about the issue with LR.

Thanks for all the good advice on here. Shame one or two people are just idiots.

115 that's more like it.

And yes I got it from there, because you said they want 690 quid to release it and 10 hours labour was mentioned before biggrin

PS: 115 quid a bloody hour could really cover some WD40....

£115/hr + vat is hardly unusual for a "premium" main dealer.

(and I'd like to hope they'd not been wasting hours spraying water displacer at a seized bolt. I'm sure they tried an actual penetrating oil...)

I'm sure they could use an oxy-torch. What's the worst that could happen?
