The car was MOT'd a few weeks before we brought it and there's a receipt with card details attached.
There is no "R" in the word "bought".
  • "bought" is the past tense of the verb "buy".
  • "brought" is past tense of the verb "bring".
It's not hard to have standards.

No doubt that simple error has prevented dozens of PH posters from amking any sense of the original post.
Perhaps you should retype and post it, so we get some sensible and informed posts on the matter! smile

Let's do some more stereotyping. He's a fat short bald man if he drives an XKR.
there's a reason I picked those places as no one in their right mind would buy in those locations from anything other than a main dealer.

Yours 6ft 2in powerfully built young ceo
Odd that. I live in Leicestershire, and have yet to sell a stolen car.

I am the bearer of bad news, if the car you bought has, in fact, been stolen you'll lose the car and the money you paid for it!
Absolutely.

OP, not sure what you're meaning when you say you can't believe the owner will get their car back and you'll have no legal rights? What else would you expect?
So I could give my keys and documents to a friend. They sell my car, can use my drive if they like. Then I can recover the car and keep say half the money, and there won't even be an investigation? Cool.
Are you asking if you can commit fraud?

I would imagine the police would be quite interested to know why the "thief" was on your property to sell the car and somehow had all the documents as well

It is code for stop being a penis, not least because you were not the first person to flag it up.

That would constitute an investigation, that was implied the OP would not get the benefit of, and just have to give the car back.

Friend had this and exactly the same issue (letter from police) a few years back after buying a 370z

Car was on SOR and the "company" folded without paying the original owner. It was all settled after a few years, he kept the car and was able to sell it eventually as it was decided that the theft wasn't actually a theft as the owner has given the documents, keys etc. and car to the trader willingly - it was then a civil dispute between them and a folded company.

If this is the case you'll have no issue as yours was a legitimate sale, the victim would sit on the other side of the transaction.
Fingers crossed for a similar outcome smile

What does "amking" mean?
It's blatantly a typo and should say 'making'. Even if you remove the whole word you can easily figure out what the sentence is supposed to say so should be even easier having all the right letters in there even if the first two are jumbled up.

I've never figured out what it is about SP&L that turns people who seem like nice people in other sections, in to complete dicks when they post in here.

OP - Hope you get this sorted ok!

No, it sounds like they are making a satirical comment about a potential scenario the OP could be in. I hope this helps clear up any ambiguity about a persons intent to commit fraud and a completely on-topic comment.

Thank you Autopilot!

It's almost two weeks now since we received the initial letter from the police and haven't received any sort of update from them since. No one seems like they're in a hurry at all, which in one way is good I suppose as we've still got the car but we are just left in limbo...

A few people have said get some legal advice but we don't really want to throw good money after bad (if there's nothing we can do)! At this point in time, I can see us having to give back the car and lose the £14k we paid for it... Which is utterly, utterly depressing.

But to all you who have given me some good advice, I really appreciate it, thank you!
