So, thought I’d update this thread with the outcome...

Single Justice Procedure was referred to a full court hearing. That was today.

51 and over in a 30mpg zone is top tier in terms of punishment / fine apparently. So 6 points and the largest fine or 7 to 56 day ban.

I went in, representing myself, tail between my legs, admitted what I did was wrong, explained the circumstances but assured them that I wasn’t justifying my actions etc. That plus a letter from my employer resulted in 6 points and a hefty’ish fine but it was reduced as I plead guilty straight away.

She did say I was fortunate as without the letter / my explanation they were looking at a 7-14 day ban.

So, stress over, I will be sticking to speed limits as a I have 9 points on my licence now. Lesson learnt, I think I’m going to buy a cheap track car and get my buzzes on track from now on, my licence is too important to me.

Fair result - other positive is given the likely time you'll likely only have a little over 2 years before you're clean again smile

After my 6 points (115-110mph on the M25) I sold the 540i and got an exige to slow down - on motorways roads anyway (never speed in rural 30's) - NSL repeater is banzai however and now a lot more fun!

Got pulled after doing 54 coming out of the Piccadilly tunnel (30), in a TVR. The copper said 'we heard you coming'. FPN, 3 pts and 60 quid. Early 2000s though so they've obviously tightened things up since then.

Yes you must.... 25 years ago (I'm that old) I had 9 points and unfortunately picked up another 3 which led to a 6 month ban.

It was a nightmare being without a car.

Be super careful.

I really will be.

I’m sure everyone says it but I’m done in with driving quickly on the road.

1) even my car is too fast to actually have fun in due to other rod users / wanting to keep my licence.

2) standing in front of 3 magistrates who have your future held in their hands but then realising you only have yourself to blame is a bit of a wake up call.

Driving at sensible speeds is underrated... had a lovely little cuise at 65-70mph to and from work on the m25 today.

I shall spend money on upgrading my sound system now rather than my turbo!

Or just buy something that's fun at non-stupid speeds...?

There’s no such thing as legal fun on the roads anymore in my opinion. You’re putting your licence at risk. Even in a 106 GTI or MX5.

I think I’ll enjoy roof down cruises and get my spirited driving fix on track days.

Rubbish, you can enjoy NSL over Moors through fog at night top down, night in general over remote countryside, etc etc

I don’t agree. An Elise on a B road over some moors can be brilliant fun within the limit.

On the thread’s subject, I was pulled at a much, much higher speed in a 30 three years back.

I assumed it’d mean prison, but I just got a ticking off. My reason for the speed must have sounded reasonable. I explained that I’d just washed it, and was out for a quick blast to dry it off before I put it away.

If you were 82, thirty years ago you must be PH's oldest member?

Surely?

Steve, for what it's worth, I think your idea of getting a track car for speed thrills is a good one.

But I'd go further than that. Trade in the Z4 for a wafty old barge. If you really want the wind in your hair, get a wafty old four seater convertible.

You'd be amazed at how the kind of car you drive influences your driving style. Whenever I've owned cars that actively encourage me to wring their necks, I have done. Conversely, driving a nice old luxo-barge at eleven-tenths just feels wrong.

EDIT: I've just had the brainwave that a big old barge with a towbar could tow a trailer... With your track car on it. thumbup

I’ve been having the same thoughts!! I’ve just spent some money on the Z4 so I was going to hold off upgrading to an M4 and keep the Z4 for a bit... my fear is that the M4 is going to get me in trouble.

I was having a conversation with a colleague on Friday and I really fancy another French hot Hatch that I could rip apart and have just for track days. The problem I have is storage so I need to speak to my parents nicely and see if I can store it at theirs!

Funnily enough, I moved from exotic and rapid transport to a Morgan for similar reasons. Some of my cars were only 'fun' at ridiculous speeds that would put you in prison - so I had a long hard think about what would deliver driving pleasure at lower speeds. I have to say I am very pleased with the Morgan - it does all of that.
