Is it a criminal offence to tip wheelie bins over to prevent wind tipping them over and spreading rubbish around? biggrin

"It was a symbolic start because the bin was put on the spot where 16 years ago two young female friends died when they were hit by a drunk driver’s speeding car."

a speed camera in a bin wont stop a drunk driver

edit: I thought cameras had to by law be painted a bright and obvious colour? which is why hadecs cameras had to be repainted from grey?

I think this phrase makes the article
"drunk driver’s speeding car."

Haven't you come across 'builders van', horse box' and 'tractor' mounted speed cameras? They've all been operated in the UK.

Yes, but they are all attended (and several feet off the ground). Where does the operator go in this wheelie bin?

There must be an operator nearby. Such cameras normally catch mostly locals and if there's no one looking after it then it would probably go walkabout.

They differ in method of operation only; some are triggered by human hand, others are not. However, all are cunningly disguised so their raison d'etre as a deterrent goes straight out the window, just like 'wheelie cam' wouldn't you say?

As others have said, this one sentence sums up the ridiculous nature of the whole "speed kills" / Brake / cameras everywhere mantra

"It was a symbolic start because the bin was put on the spot where 16 years ago two young female friends died when they were hit by a drunk driver’s speeding car."

If speed camera wheelie bins are ever used officially to enforce speed limits in the UK I will happily donate £500 to a charity of the OPs choice.

Yeah make sure it's bin collection day and push out to the roadside for normal collection.
They did trial one many years ago in Merrow, Guildford.
Fitted in a yellow Grit Bin - clever use of some spray paint sorted that out .

The NK7 is already approved and in use in the U.K. Otherwise known as Redflex HADECS3.
The Belgian company have missed the boat and are not bringing this to the UK.

I thought you get fined if you put your bins out too early, are they only going to use them in bin days.

Kids will destroy them

Is there any difference, other than technical advances, between this and previous "bin cameras" as used, IIRC, in the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Singapore, Canada, Australia, Germany, France...?

The first speed camera in a bin story must date back at least 10 years. smile

You can pretty much set your watch by how many times bin cameras and that other favourite - armco barrier cameras - crop up on here.

Next up, manufacturers who want to block modifications by making cars with bonnets that don't open! The EU planning to make cars illegal to drive without at least two people inside!
