I have black and silver on my 1986 land rover.
Never been pulled.

But;

'sorry officer, I have been to a bike show and forgot to put the proper plate back on'.

Had silver and black on my 78 magnum for 17 years and never been bothered or any MOT troubles.

So the 'pre 73 style plates' rules is also in the rolling 40 year rule, as long as the owner has completed the historic tax class bit. I didn't know that. Thanks.
I checked on DVLA website, and that is correct - it does seem a bit odd though, if you want originality you'd want reflective plates as the car had when first registered.

Governments/ DVLA do come up with some odd ideas!
