Many would rather not return than go empty handed. So it kicks off a massive crime wave of mostly petty theft. Anything they can nick they will - hence we start locking the gate.

Helmets go missing, clothes off lines, bag snatching goes up, bike theft goes right up etc.

The Police set up random road blocks and the security at ports (many will be taking the ferry across to Java) is tightened. Can't prove you own the bike - you ain't taking it on the ferry!

Happens every year and peaks just before Idul Fitri.

Interesting - I see the other side of Ramadan/Eid where I live, and although it is always safe, I would say the charitable side increases even further during these periods.
