Absolutely bizarre thread.

I have read (and probably posted) some b@llocks on here but nothing like this one.

However, it might be that the OP is confused about the whole situation.

Well yes. It might be the solicitor he visited, but it was not "his" solicitor.

7 pages and I'm lost!
OP recieves a bill for £700 odd pounds from a solicitor for a identity check- 7 pages later OP states he did not engage the services of said solicitor, why did the solicitor send the bill to the OP? confused
I am not sure they did; I think they send him money, with a deduction for their services?
Correct.

I don't get why anyone is still replying (irony understood).

The guy is incapable of giving a straight answer.

No ideas for a name

So... In post 1, when you said;

They ask me to go to a solicitor with my passport.
You meant to say they told you to go to a solicitor that they appointed, not just one you went and chose?
So from day one, the charges should have been down to the building society rather than deducted from your transfer.
If that is the case, then it appears to make sense... but I wish you had clarified that before we all went off at a tangent.

I was paying money in this week in a rare visit to my 'local' branch, which is a pain as it's 30 minutes away - having closed my three actual local branches last year.

Cash into my current account and cheque's into my business account.

I have a personal saver account that was frozen due to not enough activity. I asked about getting this unfrozen so I can transfer some money from my current account.

Apparently I have to make an appointment and bring in two forms of ID ?!

Some years ago I put £500 into a Post Office savings account in one payment. I used to get statements occasionally - and then a couple of years back they wrote to me saying that as the account was unused they were closing the account. Despite letters from me, I can get no answer from the PO. They've effectively nicked my £500 and I can't seem to find a way to get it back.
When we sold our house, we had this 'anti-money' laundering thing. I don't remember big solicitor bills though.
Ditto, and most of the work is done by a paralegal.

I think it is fair for him to challenge the deduction, but the completely misleading information along the way has been useless.
